Josephine Tey’s Daughter of Time
Following the steps below, write a 800-to-1000-word double-spaced essay addressing this prompt:
Although a work of fiction, Josephine Tey’s Daughter of Time offers rules or guidelines that help a historian make judgments about sources and interpretations. Based on your reading of Tey’s The Daughter of Time, write an essay analyzing Tey’s guidelines of historical inquiry. What rules or guidelines of historical inquiry can we learn from this mystery? In your essay, discuss/analyze four or five guidelines from the novel and be sure to provide examples from the novel supporting your analysis. Analyze the different kinds of evidence that Inspector Grant uses to build his case. How does he treat these various types of evidence and what conclusions does he draw from them? What conclusions can you draw about the historian’s craft based on your reading of the novel?
Develop a thesis statement that summarizes your answer to the prompt. (Make an argument about what we learn from the novel about the historian’s craft.) Include the thesis in an introductory paragraph that provides the full titles and names of authors for the books your paper will discuss.
End your essay with a concluding paragraph that summarizes/reinforces your main points in the essay.
Provide a bibliography and in-text page references for any and all ideas, quotes, and examples that do not originate in your own head. Plagiarism (even if unintentional) is unacceptable and warrants an F for the assignment.
Your essay must discuss specific quotes and examples from the reading to illustrate your points
Any citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago Style) is acceptable as long as it is properly and consistently used throughout the paper and bibliography.
