Environmental Geology: stream and flooding hazards
Part 1: Daily streamflow conditions USA examples
For this first part you can either use the link to Rock Creek gaging station near Foggy Bottom GWU
campus
https://waterdata.usgs.gov/dc/nwis/uv?site_no=01648000
If you prefer, you can choose a different river, pick one gaging station from the map by State and
County: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/rt
answer the following questions:
1 – what is today’s date? __________________. Scroll to the graph that shows the Discharge and record
today’s value _____________ how does that compare to the average value for that stream? (orange
triangles in the graph)?
2 – What is the discharge for this ongoing week displayed by the default graph? How does it compare
with the average values (orange triangles)?
3 – Copy and paste the discharge graph below. For example, here is the graph of Rock Creek at the
observation Station during the first week of the course:
v
4 – Is Rock creek (or the River you choose at the station of your choice) flooding? Scroll to the
graph of the gage height. A river’s gage can change daily without the river flooding! Remember
the river is connected to the Water Cycle, a very dynamic, ever changing set of connected
processes.
Part 2: Flooding conditions and the 100-year flood
5 – To see which rivers in the US are above flood stage go to
https://waterwatch.usgs.gov/new/index.php?id=ww_flood
Click on the stations at flood stage, and list 2 rivers that are flooding today (day of your observations)
6 – The Mississippi is flooding in several sections, here is the link to the observations at the
station of Vicksburg, MS.
https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ms/nwis/uv?site_no=07289000
What is the flood discharge? How much higher is the flood discharge compared to the average?
What type of flood is the Mississippi experiencing?
Exploring the 100-year flood. This part of the exercise shows one way flood hazard is dealt with in the
USA. Go to: https://www.usgs.gov/special-topic/water-science-school/science/100-year-flood?qtscience_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects
1 – Briefly summarize what is the 100-year flood and how is this parameter used in the USA
2 – Does a large storm always produce a flood? Describe the 3 parameters that affect the storm-flood
relationship
Part 3: Flooding in the World 2020
Go to the Dartmouth flood observatory website http://floodobservatory.colorado.edu/
Scroll down the page, below the featured flood, to the map of the world showing the current
events and click on the link: “Click here for current events” (see image below)
A table with recently archived events will appear, the columns report for each event country, location,
details on the beginning, the end, the area affected, the main cause, number of people displaced. Etc.
For your convenience an excel table with the data to be used for this exercise has been attached to this
assignment.
Examine the table and answer the following questions:
3 – List in decreasing order of occurrence the cause of these floods.
4 – Which of these floods could be considered the most severe? Size of the affected area?
Number of dead or displaced people? Duration? Make a case for what you think should be the
way to classify these floods, and arrange the table accordingly.
