Paper I
· Iran, or what was once Persia, is one of the longest continuous civilizations in the world dating back 100,000 years or to 7200 BCE. Iran now has nearly 82 million people along with the world’s fourth largest oil reserves. But it has also proven to be one of the most volitile states in what is called the Mideast as we have seen very dramatically recently. In 1953, the United States assisted in the overthrow of the nationalist government of Mohammad Mosaddeg or Masaddiqand reinstalled the government of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi or the Shah of Iran. Although a close ally of the United States, the Shah’s government was marked by corruption and wide spread dissent among the mostly (Shia) Islamic population. In October of 1979, when the Shah became ill and left the country for treatment, a revolution took place leading to a contentious battle between the United States and the new Islamic government. The two nations have been at odds ever since. In a paper, describe the difficult relationship between to the two nations and the volitle nature of the region. As tensions heighten between Iran and American allies (Saudi Arabia,Israel) combined with the instability of governments in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Lybia, what can be done to prevent this region from exploding into an all out war and possibly starting World War III?
