Exam Essay Questions:
1) Throughout the history of colonization there have been many laws and policies put in place for
the Indigenous peoples of North America. What laws/policies have been the most impactful on
Indigenous arts and cultures and why? Provide examples where possible.
2) The art world has often been defined from a Western or Eurocentric perspective. How do you
think this has impacted the way in which Indigenous artists have created and engaged in both
Indigenous and Western artforms?
3) Trade and interactions between cultures has been central to the evolution of Indigenous arts
and cultures. Choose one of the regions (Southwest, East, West, Northwest, North) and discuss
how trade and cultural interactions with both Indigenous and Western peoples have impacted
the region.
4) Identity is core to Indigenous cultures and has been an underlying theme in many cultural
practices and artforms. Using examples, explain and discuss how Indigenous identity in art has
changed from pre-colonization to contemporary times.
5) Climate change has been a global issue for the last 50 years. Indigenous peoples have been both
indirectly and directly affected by climate change. Discuss how Indigenous artists have been
affected by climate change when it comes to traditional artforms. How have they adapted to
climate change? How have they used their art as acts of resistance to climate change?
