DESIGNER’S NOTEBOOK PROJECT-Remote
GNST1200 20TH Century Designers
You will collect information and format as specified for 6 Designers from the Designers By The Decade sheet.
Designers are due beginning on the third week as listed on the syllabus. On the eighth week you will submit
your final designer with a one page essay as detailed in the underlined section below. Check syllabus for
complete information. I will not accept any designer bios after the 8th week. No exceptions. You will begin
by collecting information outside of class using reputable sources including the textbook. You will then
complete each section on your own. I have provided a template in the Files section which you must use as a
guide. This template is not a suggestion. I want them all EXACTLY like this.
===============================================================================
Introduction
Your assignment will include a short essay (1 page typed) on how you personally relate to fashion history. This
should be your personal point of view. How does knowing about the history of fashion and fashion designers
relate to your future career in fashion? How is it part of your personal history? How does it inspire you? This
is not due until the final designer submission on Week 8
You will complete 6 sections. Each section will include:
• Bio-Full name, biographical information (10 bullet points) and photo of the designer, Birth and death
dates. For designers still living, use the following format: Tom Ford 1961-present.
• Signature Looks-3 images that illustrate their work. These should be their “signature” designs from
when they were alive and what they are specifically known for.
• SignificanceThis is critical thinking, not more biography. Why is this designer an icon? What were their influences?
What was happening in the world when this designer was popular that matched their design aesthetic?
How did they reflect the ‘zeitgeist” or spirit of the times? List 5-10 items in complete sentences.
• Signature Looks Today-Show two images that show how this designer’s influence is seen today in
fashion. Did this designer influence a significant trend? Did this designer influence other designers
practice or style? Did this designer create a lasting “signature” silhouette in fashion history?
• Works Cited and Images Cited in MLA Format.
Format:
• All text/written information must be typed-use size 12 font.
• Pictures/Images may be from online sources in high resolution only.
• Images must be labeled with complete citations in MLA format on the Works Cited page.
• Information must be from a primary source unless otherwise approved. Do not use photos or
information from personal style blogs, Wikipedia, Google, Pinterest, etc. You may use those as a
starting point but click through to a reputable source like museums, Vogue.com, etc. Better yet, use the
FIDM digital library sources.
Grading:
You will complete one section for each of the designers. You may not use any of the nine iconic designers
presented by the instructor in class. They are not on the Designers by the Decades sheet anyway so it should be
no problem but it still happens occasionally.

Significance:
Coco Chanel was an innovator and forward thinker. She had a unique point of view which
perfectly coincided with the zeitgeist of her time. Specifically, she believed women should be
able to dress as comfortably as men. Her design aesthetic featured menswear for women
including white cuffs and collars to resemble a man’s suit, Polo sweaters, French sailor shirts
and fisherman sweaters. During and after WWI, women simply could not keep up with the tasks
they necessarily had to undertake when men went to war. The simplified, comfortable,
uncorseted clothes Chanel created were both elegant and practical. Along with the adoption of
the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, Chanel’s designs ushered in a new era.
When styles changed in 1947 and the hourglass figure came back in vogue, Chanel stepped
aside rather than compromise her vision. As the Women’s Rights Movement began to gain
steam again at the end of the 1950’s, Chanel reopened her Couture House and enjoyed more
massive success and acclaim, using her strong vision to dress women in style throughout the
1960’s.
