This week we’ve learned about the social impacts on education. While education has the potential to be an equalizer and contributes significantly to economic mobility in society, not all educations are equal.
Fill of the activity sheet below, comparing some characteristics of a high school in a high income area to a high school in a low income area.
Choose a local high school from a low income and high income neighborhood. Use their
website, the district website (for the school accountability report card- SARC), and your insider
knowledge to guide you through the following questions. You may have to read into the
information you find in order to answer the following questions.
1. Names of high schools (one “high income” and one “low income”:
2. What neighborhood effects are visible at the school? (The SARC will help with this- look for
connections between school funding and student performance)
3. What tracking programs are at the school? (Look for clubs or parent resources on the
website)
4. Find examples of the following subcultures at the school (the club list is a good place to look).
You might not be able to find examples of a nonconformist group:

5. What are the cultural messages (e.g. academic, moral, social) of the high school? Provide
examples to support your answer- the mission statement is a good place to look.
