per 3306: This time, our discussion will embrace the essentials of Social Science theories
.
As Vito and Maahs, (2017) explain:
- Psychological theories focus on how certain personality traits are learned behaviors and intelligence lead people to engage in deviant behavior, criminal or otherwise.
- The major premise of social structural school is that the reasons why people engage in deviant behavior (criminal or otherwise) are rooted and impelled by the very structure of society.
- Process theories focus on the interplay between the individual and society. They focus on how society (i.e: family, peers, religion) shape individuals over time.
- Social conflict theories suggest that the law reflects the outcome of the struggle over power. Deviance is a political concept where those shape both the content of the law and the definition of deviance.
According to West and Turner (2012), Symbolic Interaction theory offers some insights on human behavior in a variety of contexts. The theory explains how that human development of self is experiential in relationship to a given society. That is, we develop the role of self as influenced by our surroundings.
According to the United Nations, the definition of terrorist is inconclusive. Terrorism experts have over 100 different definitions of who is or is not considered a terrorist (Record, 2003). The problem is that what one nation considers terrorist, another nation considers freedom fighters.
