Sociology 235 Exam 3 (Final Exam)Create a new Word document without your name, this will ensure I can grade with usernames
hidden.
You will be graded on the clarity, composition, use of important concepts and depth of your
argument(s).
Short Response: I’m looking for a strong and thorough paragraph at the very least, be as
thorough as possible.
Choose THREE of the following questions to answer
1. What are the five aspects of deviance and how do they apply to homosexuality? Explain
them. What are three ways (examples) in which anti-LGBTQ views continue to harm that
community?
2. How does stigma relate to disability and sexuality? Compare and contrast the social
model of disability and the individual model. Specifically, how does the social model get
us closer to understanding disablement as a civil rights issue?
3. How does the chapter by Jane Ward complicate our understanding of “straight”
sexuality? What does Ward discuss that might lead us to think that human sexuality is
more complex that we are led to believe?
4. What are the main arguments of the article on disability and capitalism by Russell and
Malhotra? Provide a couple of examples from the text and explain them. How has
capitalism marginalized but also capitalized of off disabled bodies?
5. Briefly describe the three “waves” of feminism? What does it mean to say that we are in
a “post-feminist” time? What are some of the different ways in which sexism affects
women? Using the work of bell hooks (third wave), explain how feminism as a
“movement to end sexism” might be a useful way forward from the second wave.
6. Identify and explain three problems with our criminal justice system. Similarly, from the
course readings, identify and explain three arguments for the abolition of police and
prisons. How does these problems, and solutions, seek to address the past and present
history of the criminal justice system in the United States?
7. [Cumulative Question] What is the role of the media in maintaining US norms around
policing and the military? Provide examples. For both (policing and US
militarism/nationalism) what is the purpose (or function) and what are the consequences
of the dominant media view? Connect your response to at least two aspects of the course
we discussed earlier in the semester.
