Textbook: Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Minimum of 3 outside scholarly sources in addition to the textbook/lesson
Introduction
There is a strong tradition of creating both sociologically-informed biographies and
sociologically-informed autobiographies in the discipline of sociology. The socio
autobiography is a “disciplined, systematic exploration of one’s life from a sociological
point of view” (Hill, 2009, p. 3). Also, the sociobiography is the systematic exploration of
another person’s life from a sociological point of view.
For this assignment, you will be doing one of those (your socio autobiography) in the
form of a Narrated PowerPoint, and for Week 7, you will interview an adult of your
choice to create a sociobiography, then, also in the form of a Narrated PowerPoint.
For this week’s socio autobiography Narrated PowerPoint, you will reflect on your own
life story, making connections between your everyday life/life story and the broad
sociocultural structures within which you live. To begin this assignment, consider your
own life as you review all the textbook readings and online weekly lessons and decide
which sociological concepts you wish to explain in connection to a part or parts of your
own life story. Focus on vocabulary words in bold in your textbook reading, for example,
and decide which terms apply to you and to your life story.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Reflect
As you consider your own life consider the following questions:
•
•
•
•
How might a sociologist introduce you?
How have social influences shaped you?
What were the social forces that constructed your life or lifestyle?
How have you negotiated the crisscrossing pressures of autonomy and
conformity?
• Who are you in social context and what does it mean to understand your life
using the “sociological imagination,” or utilizing a sociological perspective?
• What sociological concepts would be most helpful in understanding and
interpreting your life experiences, whether class, or reference group, conformity,
agents of socialization, gender socialization, racial socialization, norms, roles,
significant others, total institutions (particularly if you were in the military),
achieved status, ascribed status, deviance, subculture, culture, culture shock,
ethnocentrism, folkways, mores, peer groups, and any others described in the
textbook chapters, to interpret your life experiences?
•
What events, moments or relationships in your life have impacted you
significantly?
Include the following in your analysis:
•
Quotes or paraphrases and citations from both outside scholarly sources and
assigned readings (online Lessons or textbook readings), to support your
observations in your presentation.
• 6 different concepts, key words, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-6 in your
analysis and observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and
underlined on slides.
o You may repeat these 6 terms throughout the PowerPoint presentation,
if you want to, but you are not required to.
Instructions
For this personal case study project, you are required to create a narrated PowerPoint
presentation with audio and/or video within the PowerPoint. The audio/video must be
part of the PowerPoint file. Audio/video may not be external to the presentation and you
must submit a .ppt file extension PowerPoint file.
The presentation must include the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Part or Parts of Your Own Life Story:Explain and analyze your life story or
parts of your life story as a sociologist might, examining sociological categories
relevant to your life story.
o Include details of family, culture, and background.
o Consider what types of categories a sociologist might use to describe
you.
Audio Narration:Allow the audio narration to serve as the main explanation of
the presentation. Do not use blocks of text on slides. If you want to add
additional written explanations, in addition to the audio narration, you may add
that in presentation notes for slides.
Engagement:Be sure to deliver the presentation in a professional and engaging
manner.
Visual Aids: Include photos of yourself and photos or symbols that represent the
sociological concepts you are analyzing in your presentation. Your own
personal photos do not need to be cited, but if you use any images from the
Internet or from any sources other than your own personal photographs, you
must include citations for those and those citations are *not* part of your
required 3 outside scholarly sources plus the online Lesson or textbook.
Key Words in Bold and Underlined: Be sure to include 6 different concepts,
key words, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-6 in your analysis and
observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and underlinedon slides
Visual Appeal and Organization: Do not include slides with large blocks of text.
Use bullet points, brief text, and clear organization to create an organized and
visually appealing presentation.
Citations:Include parenthetical in-text citations in the slide presentation citing at
least 3 outside scholarly sources and assigned textbook/lesson reading to
support observations made in the presentation. Remember, cite sources for all
images, too, that are not your personal photographs and those sources do *not*
count as part of your 3 required outside scholarly sources plus the
textbook/lesson.

Minimum of 4 outside scholarly sources in addition to the textbook/lesson
One personal interview of another adult of your choosing
Introduction
As you learned in Week 3, for your Socioautobiography Narrated PowerPoint
assignment, there is a strong tradition of creating both sociologically-informed
biographies and sociologically-informed autobiographies in the discipline of sociology.
The socioautobiography is a “disciplined, systematic exploration of one’s life from a
sociological point of view” (Hill, 2009, p. 3). Also, the sociobiography is the systematic
exploration of another person’s life from a sociological point of view.
For this assignment, you will be building upon the work you began in your Week 3
Socioautobiography Narrated PowerPoint. For this week’s assignment, you will
interview an adult person of your choosing and complete a sociobiography of that
person, and present that in a narrated PowerPoint. You will also compare and contrast
that person’s sociological characteristics with your own.
To begin this assignment, consider the sociological concepts you focused on for your
Week 3 assignment about yourself and consider what sociological concepts you would
like to compare and contrast with the person you interview.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Reflect
Just as you did for your Week 3 assignment, and now, as you create questions to ask
the person you interview, consider the following questions for potential use in your
interview:
•
•
•
• What events, moments or relationships in your life have impacted you
significantly?
Interview
Locate an adult willing to be interviewed about their life story. The person can be any
adult you choose, whether in your family or outside your family. Be sure to inform that
person that you will be writing up your observations from the interview in a presentation
for your Society and Culture course.
Present
In a narrated PowerPoint, compare and contrast your sociological observations about
yourself that you shared in your Week 3 assignment with your sociological observations
of the person you interview. Address the following 2 important sections:
1. Explore the interconnections between the life story of a person you interview and
the larger social structure or culture.
2. Compare and contrast the sociological themes and concepts related to your own
personal story with the sociological themes and concepts related to the story of
the person you interviewed. Apply the sociological imagination in the analysis.
Include the following in your analysis:
•
Quotes or paraphrases and citations from 4 outside scholarly sources and
assigned readings (online Lessons or textbook readings), to support your
observations in your presentation.
• 6 different concepts, key words, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-16 in your
analysis and observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and
underlinedon slides.
o You may repeat these 6 terms throughout the PowerPoint presentation,
if you want to, but you are not required to.
Instructions
For this comparative case study project, you are required to create a narrated
presentation. The audio/video must be part of the PowerPoint file. Audio/video may not
be external to the presentation and you must submit a .ppt file extension PowerPoint
file.
The presentation must include the following:
•
Part or Parts of the Life Story of the Person You Interview:Explain and
analyze the life story of the person you interview, or parts of the life story of the
person you interview, as a sociologist might, examining sociological categories
relevant to that person’s life story.
o Include details of family, culture, and background.
o Consider what types of categories a sociologist might use to describe
the person.
• Comparison and/or Contrast of the life story of the person you interview with
your own life story that you presented in your Week 3 assignment
•
•
•
•
•
Audio Narration:Allow the audio narration to serve as the main explanation of
the presentation. Do not use blocks of text on slides. If you want to add
additional written explanations, in addition to the audio narration, you may add
that in presentation notes for slides.
Engagement:Be sure to deliver the presentation in a professional and engaging
manner.
Visual Aids: DO NOT include a photo of the person you interview, to maintain
confidentiality of the person you interview, but images or symbols as visual aids
should still be included. Include photos or symbols that represent the
sociological concepts you are analyzing in your presentation. You may include a
photo of yourself, if you wish, in your comparison. If you use any images from
the Internet or from any sources other than your own personal photographs, you
must include citations for those and those citations are *not* part of your
required 4 outside scholarly sources plus the online Lesson or textbook. Key
Words in Bold and Underlined: Be sure to include 6 different concepts, key
words, or vocabulary words from Chapters 1-16 in your analysis and
observations on your slides, formatted in boldface and underlinedon slides
Visual Appeal and Organization: Do not include slides with large blocks of text.
Use bullet points, brief text, and clear organization to create an organized and
visually appealing presentation.
Citations:Include parenthetical in-text citations in the slide presentation citing at
least 4 outside scholarly sources and assigned textbook/lesson reading to
support observations made in the presentation. Remember, cite sources for all
images, too, that are not your personal photographs and those sources do *not*
count as part of your 4 required outside scholarly sources plus the
textbook/lesson.

Deviance refers to a violation of
the established social norms.
Social norms are unwritten rules
about how people should behave.
They provide people with the
expected idea of how they should
behave in a particular culture or
social group (Kendall, 2018).
I did my deviant behaviors up to
when I was 18 years old.
During the time of deviance, I
would get into trouble with my
mother.
She almost got overwhelmed with
my behaviors because she had not
experienced that with my brother.

She completely refused to accept

Furthermore, she considered my

The person I chose to interview
was my friend Anthony.
Anthony was born in Brownville,
Nebraska in 1980.
His parents are immigrants from
Guyana. He was born in a family of
6, that his, his father, mother, and
three siblings.
He was born last in his family.
He is a family man of two, a girl
and a boy.
He studied at Raul Yzaguirre
School for Success before joining
Tidehaven Independent School
District.
He later joined New York State
University where he studied
Sociology.

Anthony’s Background
Cont…
Anthony strongly believes in cultural connotation as well
as getting solutions to the problems faced in society
through family stability, diversity, and education.
He believes that these are the key factors for one to
achieve upward social mobility.
Social mobility refers to the movement of individuals,
and families within or between social strata in a society
(Kendall, 2018).
In most cases, it refers to a change in the wealth and
social status of persons or households (Dannefer, KelleyMoore & Huang, 2016).
For more than 10 years, he has worked closely with
families, different communities, sociologists, and social
centers for the realization of unity in society.

Anthony’s
Background
Anthony has dedicated his life to
studying
sociological
Cont…
imagination specifically on class
consciousness, racial prejudice, and
family values.
The sociological imagination is the
ability to perceive things socially and
how their interactions result in
influences on each other (Kendall,
2018).
In 2010, he achieved an award in New
York as one of the dedicated
sociologists.
Anthony’s personality is defined by a
perception of society as a perfect place
to live requires people who are united
and educated and are able to apply their
learned skills in solving issues in society.

Anthony’s Background
Cont…
He has had several clients who
are accused of crime due to
their family backgrounds mostly
those who have faced separation
and are poor.
Crime is seen to stem from a
moral decline in society
specifically due to increased
selfishness as well as disregard
of laws and norms in society
(Maitra, Mclean & Deuchar,
2018).
Through his counseling, many
families have gained stability.

Similarities between
Anthony
and
I
For both Anthony and I, education forms a similarity
because we both believe it is education, combined with
other social factors, which can lead to development in
society.
We believe society can be changed for the better through
education (McKnight, 2017).
Anthony believes in family values as well as its unity.
Likewise, I dedicate myself to my family and family
values.
Another similarity comes from our perception of moral
consciousness.
Both of us agree on the importance of
maintaining morality in society.
Concerning the matter of equality, the two of us believe
that there should be no inequality irrespective of race,
ethnicity, and gender.

Differences between Anthony
and I
As for Anthony, he tends to give much concentration on
family values but does not give much concentration on
cultural involvement.
As for me, I am somehow concerned with my cultural
heritage.
I believe that society is defined by culture and there are
several problems that stem from cultural inclination.
Understanding one’s culture helps him or her to become
culturally competent.
Cultural competence is an important quality for nurses in
the delivery of healthcare (Henderson et al., 2018).
Another difference is that Anthony sees low household
income as a result of family separation. As for me, I see
divorce as the cause of family instability.

Differences between Anthony
and I
Anthony perceives Cont…
crime as a societal factor that
causes the destruction of morals and deterrence of
freeing society from social problems.
As for me, I do not give much concentration to crime
because I grew in a loving family and there was no
crime.
Furthermore, Anthony was not comfortable discussing
matters of religion unlike me who is always free to
discuss and participate in religious activities.
