SOC109 (20221) — INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINOLOGY AND LAW AND SOCIETY
Prof. Haag
Pre-Essay Assignment Instructions
The world of crime and law is huge–far bigger than what we can cover in just one course. We’d love to
hear about the issues related to criminology and law and society that matter to you and how you would
analyze them using concepts and theories from our class. Your analytical essay is meant to do just that.
The goal of this assignment is to analyze and explain a research article’s findings and main arguments
by applying specific theories and concepts from class material.
The assignment is due in three steps:
Step One: Pre-Essay Assignment (5% –**Due February 1st by 11:59 PM**

The basis of a strong analytical research paper is engagement with relevant scholarship. For step
one, you will find a research article covering a topic that interests you about crime, law &
society
Your article must be drawn from the databases and journals linked under the library resources’ section
of our course website (q.utoronto.ca).
Please use journal articles only. Do not use chapters or books.
Prior to the due date, we will have a synchronous instructional session introducing the
library resources section and guiding you through the resources available at the library.

Your source will be evaluated according to the following three criteria:
o It was published in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
o It presents social scientific findings based upon an analysis of data and not a literature review,
law review, or a commentary. A quick way to make sure this criterion is satisfied is to look for a
“Methodology” or “Data and Methods” section of the article.
Once you have identified your source, the next steps are to develop the following items:
A brief, 3-4 sentence section including a brief summary of the main findings of the article and a
section identifying how the article links to the course concepts and theories you plan to apply,
and a description of how the article contributes to the analysis of your essay.
o A complete ASA citation. To aide with this requirement, an ASA style guide is available under
the writing resources’ module on our course website.
O
As the course unfolds, you will be learning about other theories and concepts that may interest you.
As such, you are not required to use the same theories and concepts from your pre-essay assignment
for your analytical essay. If you decide to switch your approach, you are not required to get permission
from the professors or TA.
Your assignment will be submitted to the drop box on the course website (q.utoronto.ca)
When submitting your assignment, you must also submit a PDF copy of the article you’ve chosen.
