Qualitative Studies
Background of Study
The research carried out by Willmer & Salzmann-Erikson in the year 2018 examined
thoughts and shared values among individuals who visit a web forum after the bariatric surgery.
However, there is no sufficient knowledge regarding the time as well as the incidence of
nutritional deficiencies. In addition, there is a lack of information on the efficacy of the
supplementation. Therefore, it is essential to attain clear guidelines for counseling as well as
nutritional follow. The chief aim of the research by Willmer & Salzmann-Erikson (2018) is to
investigate how the participants who visit a web forum about the bariatric operation share their
feelings, thoughts, and values. Individuals have unreasonable expectations regarding how
bariatric surgery changes their lives.
On the other hand, the research performed by Tarrant et al. (2017) examined the different
effects of a group-based program for obese patients’ ways of life. As a result, the people are in
desperate search of the ways to lose an excess pound of weight. Thus, the majority of the people
have opted for bariatric surgery in order to get rid of morbid surgery. According to the authors,
bariatric surgery is one of the workable treatments for sullen obesity. Nevertheless, the statistics
have revealed that the majority of the patients regain weight after five years of bariatric surgery.

proposed several definitions associated with post-surgical bariatric patients.
How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?
The care of nursing throughout the bariatric procedure is crucial for achieving positive
outcomes. The nursing care starts with the initial appointment of the bariatric patient; however, it
persists at every phase of the process.
The failure of bariatric surgery can lead to an increase in the costs as well as the poor
health outcomes of the patients. Therefore, nurses must comprehend that these poor outcomes
are a threat to the people in the United States. The findings of this study advocate the role of the
nurses in the perioperative and postoperative care and are central to my PICOT question that
intends to determine if bariatric patients who participate in preoperative and postoperative
bariatric education classes have a more fabulous success of weight loss compared to those who
do not participate. On the other hand, the research by Tarrant et al. (2017) noted that bariatric
patients are at a higher risk of developing several complications following bariatric surgery. In
order to avoid poor health outcomes, it is essential to engage in a lifelong follow-up
appointment. The nurses, as the advocates of the patients in the hospital, can reinforce preventive
care. The findings of this research can assist me in responding to the PICOT question as they
presented insights into the significance of nursing care for post-surgery bariatric patients.
However, the interventions utilized by both the researches are distinctive to that used in my
study. Similarly, in the study by Cooley, there is no control group.

Method of Study
Willmer & Salzmann-Erikson (2018) conducted a cross-sectional observational
investigation employing qualitative contents examination; the online forum thread attracted a
total of 498 posts about bariatric surgery. On the contrarily, Tarrant et al. used a semi-structured
one-to-one interview with twenty participants, whereby 12 were patients with a BMI ≥ of 35
kg/m2. For the past year, every member had undergone at least one bariatric surgery. None of the
members had bariatric surgery. Bariatric care groups helped patients to deal with emotional and
physical needs when they are adapting new lifestyle modifications as well as their weight
management loss journey. It should be the focus of the care pathway to promote a feeling of
shared social identity among patients who are struggling to cut their overweight pounds. It offers
information to the productive interpretation of dietetic content in group programs.
Results of Study
The findings of the exploration performed by Willmer & Salzmann-Erikson (2018)
provide a portrayal of the feeling, values, opinions, and communication of forum posters who
visit an online conversation forum while bearing in mind as well as experiencing the bariatric
surgery. Four topics were constructed during information examination: a) Managing the attitudes
of others; b) An unfortunate obligation—dealing with the pre-usable eating routine; c) playing
the waiting game and negotiating the system; and d) expecting to start a new life full of mind and

accounts focused on the rise of a feeling of self-dependent on their cooperation in the group:
building up mental associations with different shared social identity or patients was viewed as
the principal system whereby the educational program resources was gotten into and supported
the experience of social help within the group. Members came to encounter their ‘problem’
through a collective focal point after they interacted with other patients, whereby they shared
their challenges, and this made them feel engaged to start and sustain personal lifestyle change.
Ethical Considerations
The first ethical consideration in conducting research is attaining the approval for the
study. The researchers in both studies have achieved it before the commencement of the
research. The second ethical consideration is citing the information obtained from the secondary
resources. This is essential to avoid plagiarism in the study. The researchers of both the study
have adequately cited the information attained from the secondary resources. They have
reviewed a considerable amount of literature to support their findings. This implies that both the
researches have performed within the ethical limits put forwarded by the ethics committee of the
University.
