Paper #3
Rhetorical Analysis of Ready Player One
(150 Points)
For this paper, you will do a close reading style of analysis. By analysis, we are looking for an in-depth examination of a topic. Because we are using Ready Player One as our main text, this will need to have literary and cinematic as well as rhetorical elements. To do the analysis, you will choose a moment or string of moments that you find significant in the book. You will then compare and contrast that moment with how the movie portrays it. You may choose to look at a single scene or a thematic element through the book, they just must be clearly defined. You will need to look beyond the surface to find themes, genre, and to really pick apart the texts. Think about how we use rhetoric: appeals (ethos, logos, pathos), audience, purpose, Kairos, exigence, etc. Look at and evaluate how well both texts use rhetoric to accomplish their goals. Think about how Cline’s and Spielberg’s perspectives and time periods might have influenced their choices.
Some questions to consider for the analysis:
· What is Cline’s and Spielberg’s purpose in including this moment? How do you know?
· What are the specific rhetorical devices used? (Please point these out and define them for us so that the audience can follow the logic of your claim.)
· How effective are these rhetorical devices for the Cline’s purpose? For Spielberg’s?
· What literary elements (think about things such as dialogue, onomatopoeia, allusion, foreshadowing, metaphors, etc.) and cinematic elements (soundtrack, camera angles, lighting, casting, etc.) contribute to the ideas presented?
· How would the book or movie be different if this moment(s) was changed or omitted?
