Yunchang Guan, also known as Guanyu and Guangong was a military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was born in Hedong Commandery around 160 CE(Common era) during the end of the Han dynasty. He was one of the primary generals in Liu’s military. After the “Battle of Red Cliffs”, Guan helped Liu achieved many victories. And he was decapitated after deny serving in Sun Quan’s team. Throughout his life, beyond all questions, he was and still is famous for many of his brave combat. His accomplishments and traits have great influences in Chinese society today.

At Guan’s early life, he escaped from his hometown to Zhuo Commandery涿郡 after he murdered someone. In 184 CE, Liu Bei organized a militia by the supporters from the village to help defend the village from the yellow turban. Guan and Zhang Fei became part of the team and began flighting together with Liu Bei. Soon after they developed a brotherhood between three of them. They treated each other as brothers and never deny any orders Liu gives during the combat.

While his loyalty towards Liu Bei is honored, he is also known for repaying Cao Cao’s kindness by slaying Yan Liang, a general under Cao Cao’s rival Yuan Shao, at the Battle of Boma. After Liu Bei gained control of Yi Province in 214, Guan Yu remained in Jing Province to govern and defend the area for about seven years. In 219, while he was away fighting Cao Cao’s forces at the Battle of Fancheng, Liu Bei’s ally Sun Quan broke the Sun–Liu alliance and sent his general Lü Meng to conquer Liu Bei’s territories in Jing Province. By the time Guan Yu found out about the loss of Jing Province after his defeat at Fancheng, it was too late. He was subsequently captured in an ambush by Sun Quan’s forces and executed.

· After his death, he was deified and named “Guangong” by the people. Many imperial dynasties in the past had commendations about Guan. He was nominated as the Sage of Military by the Qing Dynasty. This is being said that his nomination is the same level as the Sage of Literature––Confucius.

Guan Yu –– a Chinese military general whose martial prowess was so great that, after his death, he was defined as a god. In modern time, he is revered for his bravery and loyalty. He was also become a popular figure in historical fiction, movies and video games.
Here is a picture of a statue that is now sitting in the park at the Jingzhou city in the Hubei province of China. It stands at 48m and weighs in at 1320-tons. And it has been placed on a 10m pedestal.

As a Chinese, I heard many people believe that Guan is the symbol of bravery. And if Guan is being tattooed on their body, they be safe and brave when they are outside. I think this can be also explained by some Christian carrying the cross with them and some Buddhist carrying Buddha beads with them.
In Taiwan, Guan Yu is known as the Taiwanese believers’ benefactor, that also is, the meaning of the savior. Which represents the importance of gguan to the local people.
