Throughout your education, you have been asked to research topics and write papers, engage in thought-provoking discussions, consider diverse perspectives and a host of other challenges that have required you to use both your discipline-specific skills as well as your soft skills. These are called transferable skills and are skills that you develop that can be transferred and applied within your chosen career. Transferable skills are highly valuable and essential for career success.
Throughout this course, you have been working on a project that allowed you to demonstrate your understanding of transferable skills. It is now time to submit your project/assignment and add a transferable skills reflection.
To complete this assignment, you will need to do the following:
Part I: Compiling Your Exemplar Project
Compile all of your completed course project assignment deliverables. Place them in the proper order, and save them in a single Microsoft Word document.
Part II: Transferable Skills Self Reflection
1. In a minimum of 1 full-page, using Microsoft Word, write an essay (full introduction and conclusion), which includes the following:
- Describe the knowledge, skills and/or attitudes regarding each of the transferable skills that you’ve gained as a result of completing this particular project/assignment.
- Discuss the ways that you are going to incorporate the transferable skills (the transferable skills that you showcased in your exemplary project) into your work within your chosen career field.
- Describe your future goals based on the transferable skills that you’ve chosen to showcase.
- Write your paper utilizing proper tone, spelling and grammar.
2. Once you have completed your reflection assignment, add it to the end of the document you compiled in part I. The self-reflection should be the last few pages of your exemplar project. If done correctly, everything will be one document!
3. Save the compiled document to a folder. Then, zip or compress the folder, and submit the zipped folder to the drop box.

Addressing Calvin’s Needs

Addressing Calvin’s Needs
1. Provide an overview of Calvin’s overall presentation, based upon what you notice
about him in your interactions with him, as the Human Services Professional
working with him. Does he appear to be willing to participate in services? Why or
why not? Is he able to do so? Why or why not? What evidence do you have of his
willingness and/or potential non-compliance in some or all potential areas where
intervention is necessary?
Calvin is untidy and in need of emergency help. More time will be required to develop a case
plan of action for him. Based on the gathered information, Calvin needs housing, medical care
for diabetes, psychiatric services, and food assistance. From the interaction with Calvin, he is
willing to participate in some services and not others. Providing help will enable Calvin to take
time and develop ways to sustain himself independently. This will enable him to stay away from
criminal activities that may take him back to jail. He is will participate in:
•
Stable housing. Calvin’s brother will be moving to another state by the end of the
month. This will leave Calvin homeless. He will appreciate it if he got a stable place
to stay. He greeted me with so much energy indicating that he is seeking help. He is
open with his problems and he could not hesitate to tell the truth.
•
He will appreciate food assistance. He appears disheveled, hair and clothes untidy. He
looks hungry and in need of food assistance. He has just left jail hence he is
unemployed. This indicates his willingness to accept this service.
3
•
Psychiatric care. Calvin indicated a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder. Since he opened
up about the condition, then he is seeking help. This suggests that is willing to receive
help and attend the services.
However, Calvin shows potential non-compliance in medical care for diabetes and follow-up
care for oncological services after battling and surviving cancer two years ago. He has not taken
any steps to continue with his medication which worries me the most. The intervention is
important for his health hence strict measures should be set to ensure that he attends the medical
care.
2. Based on the information that has been gathered relative to Calvin’s needs, develop
a goal for each area of concern that has been noted and why each goal has been
established.
To assist Calvin, intervention goals should be set based on the needs of the client. The goals
must be specific and viable. Some of the goals are:
•
To establish stable housing for Calvin. Since his brother will be moving to a different
state soon, Calvin needs a place to stay. He is also unemployed which means he cannot
afford to rent a house. He does not have friends or relatives to accommodate him. This
will render him homeless by the end of the month. With his poor health, homelessness
will do more damage to Calvin. He needs proper housing.
•
To provide medical care for diabetes and follow-up care for oncological services after
battling and surviving cancer two years ago. Diabetes is a critical condition that requires
constant check-ups and medication to avoid complications. Oncological services are
necessary to check the status of the body after cancer survival. Patients need to attend
4
clinics to check if they are completely healed or they need more care. The medical care
services will improve his health.
•
To seek Psychiatric care due to the diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder and get a prescription
for this disorder. Since the condition is critical, quick intervention is necessary. This is to
prevent further damage like mania and depression.
•
To provide food assistance. Calvin does not have enough money to eat nutritiously. His
health is deteriorating and quick intervention is necessary. Coupled with the other health
conditions, balanced meals should be availed to Calvin. This will improve his health
tremendously.
Accumulation of resources to cater to these needs will go a long way in improving his life. He
may change his ways and gain his independence given good care.
3. Because Rasmussen Help Center, LLC is an agency in your local community where
you work, identify providers within your community that can assist Calvin with
each of the areas in which he needs assistance. Include a synopsis of each provider
and how these providers can specifically assist Calvin in supporting him
progressively towards self-sufficiency.
Calvin is part of this community and hence his intervention will be a joint effort. The community
should come together in improving Calvin’s health, economic and social status (Laura Grindstaff
et al., 2010). Calvin needs some assistance to develop self-sufficiency. Some people and
organizations are capable of providing the necessary help. The providers are:
•
Housing: a three-quarter housing unit by Melees Agency is a housing facility that
provides lower levels of supervision for former drug addicts. This will provide a sober
5
environment for Calvin to thrive both mentally, physically, and emotionally. The home
provides free accommodation, food, and personal care. It has a guidance and counseling
unit that takes care of the mental health of the people. The trained specialists take care of
the clients until they are ready to leave the facility. This will guide Calvin to selfindependence. The facility has been chosen because it is well-known, with lower
supervision and a corruption-free environment.
•
The Presbyterian Hospital is a public hospital that will provide medical care for diabetes
and follow-up care for oncological services. The hospital provides free care for homeless
people with reference letters from acceptable agencies. Rasmussen Help Center, LLC is a
well-known facility and can write a letter of reference describing Calvin’s current
condition and needs. The hospital will provide regular diabetes check-ups and
medication. Moreover, oncological services will be carried out to ensure that Calvin is
cancer-free.
•
NYC Well is a psychiatric hospital that provides both short-term and long-term care for
patients who are not capable of paying for the services. The hospital will treat Bipolar I
Disorder and get a prescription for this disorder. This will prevent further harm from the
condition. Furthermore, the facility will provide confidential care in mental health and
substance use help. Calvin will benefit from his journey to self-sufficiency.
4. Discuss how you would engage Calvin towards feeling empowered and resilient so
that he is ultimately successful in achieving a better way of life. How should the
Human Services Professional engage Calvin towards feeling competent and able to
be successful so that he can become independent?
6
According to research by the National Institute of Justice, 69% of released people are jailed
again within 4 years, 80% are rearrested within 7 years and 84% are rearrested within 10 years
(Farrugia, 2015). This shows how difficult it is to make the transition from prison to society.
Some procedures will be used to facilitate Calvin’s complete transition. The methods will engage
Calvin towards feeling empowered and resilient so that he is ultimately successful in achieving a
better way of life. The procedures are:
•
Start Early
I will write down a plan to ensure a successful life after jail for Calvin. He will have to
attend release programs before getting a job. The programs will change his beliefs and attitudes
about crime. The program will stipulate what to do and what not to do to stay on the right side of
the law. Moreover, the programs will address mental health and training for specific careers.
•
Strengths and weaknesses assessment
With my supervision, Calvin will point out his strength and weaknesses. This will enable
us to evaluate the way forward. Strengths will involve education level, employment, any skills
possessed, relationships, networks, and talents. Weaknesses may involve habits, addiction,
character traits, and others.
•
Mentors
A group of solid mentors will be allocated to Calvin to guide him through his new life.
These mentors will offer support, advice, and friendship that Calvin needs to move forward.
•
Locate resources
7
Helpful resources from willing society members will go a long way in helping him.
Governmental resources and aid from churches will be used to train Calvin in his desired career.
The job will enable him to cater to his needs like housing, medical care, and others. With the
assistance of the DUII Attorney and Lake Oswego, criminal defense more resources will be
collected.
•
Community service
Contributing to community services like cleaning will enable Calvin to interact with others
and make new friends. The community service will take effort, time, and intentionality which
will help him to develop a constructive future.
5. Cultural sensitivity is a skill that is necessary for all Human Services Professionals.
What is your specific plan towards ensuring that you are culturally sensitive when
working with Calvin? How can you encourage cultural diversity with colleagues
(noting, that a team effort may be necessary when working with clients with
complex needs) and why is it important to utilize culturally-based strategies when
Human Services Professionals interact with diverse client populations? Why is this
important for ensuring that Human Services Professionals develop a rapport with
clients
Cultural competency is crucial for all Human Services Professionals. This will ensure that the
facilities are accessible and acceptable to all people regardless of cultural differences.
Homelessness is considered a culture of its kind. When dealing with Calvin, I should look
beyond his uniqueness. I will avoid any actions or utterances that will diminish, disempower and
8
demean his cultural identity (Inverarity et al., 1983). Since this is a complex case, Calvin will
interact with most of my colleagues. I will talk to them about the importance of maintaining
equality among different clients despite their cultures. It is important to utilize culturally-based
strategies when Human Services Professionals interact with diverse clients as this will improve
the service delivery while improving positive outcomes. These strategies include:
•
Activating Calvin’s prior knowledge about living in the society while observing laws.
This will give us the chance to point out the drawbacks of his thinking. This will
build the case appropriately.
•
I will encourage Calvin to interact with people of different cultures to uphold
diversity. This will encourage him to do the right thing for everybody.
Appreciating Calvin and encouraging him towards becoming a productive member of society,
will develop a rapport with the client. This will ease our conversation and assistance hence
improving his life.

Evidence-Base Best Practices
Sociology refers to social scientists studying social life, change, causes, and outcome
of human behavior. It aids in the understanding of human acts and awareness. It also
investigates the social causes of family conflict, deviant behavior, and racial gender.
Sociologists look into the structure of groups, firms’ societies, and the interaction of people
with these contexts (Mishra, 2016). This paper, therefore, explains various personal
sociological issues such as; drug addiction, anger, physical and sexual abuse, domestic
violence, chronic depression, and their prevention measures. It also focuses on the role of the
supervisor in solving sociological issues.
Addiction refers to the inability to cease using a substance or indulging in behaviors
that cause mental and physical damage. Marijuana is the most frequently abused illegal drug
that is often considered harmless. Stephanie is one of the marijuana addicts, her addiction
being stimulated by the surrounding. Some of the side effects of marijuana include; mental
health issues such as problems with memory, slowed reaction times, and worries. It also
causes respiratory disorders, suppressed immune system, and reduced fertility. Some of the
measures that will prevent Stephanie from falling back to addiction include;
Keeping away from high-risk circumstances that would lead her into drug abuse. She
should avoid his brother, who is a chronic marijuana abuser. Making an effort to relocate
from his brother’s premises would be one of the most important steps (Ajzen, 2020).
Stephanie needs to stick with her treatment scheme. Stephanie should take her advised
medication and attend support group gatherings, helping her stay drug-free. Getting help
immediately if she uses the drug again would be an added advantage. If she finds herself
using the drug, she should take the step of conducting a doctor or counselor immediately.
Anger refers to a negative feeling state related to aggressive ideas, physiological
arousal, and maladaptive conduct. It is commonly caused by stress and increases the risk
of high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and gastric ulcers. Anger management
2
3
Evidence-Base Best Practices
enables one to control tense circumstances positively. This aids in decreased anger.
Stephanie lacks anger management skills. Therefore, she should attend anger management
therapy where she will;
•
try and look into what triggers her anger and ways of responding to it in a positive way
rather than a negative way
•
learn effective communication that will defuse anger and resolve conflicts
•
participate in exercises hence help in reducing anger
•
learn to show her feelings assertively rather than aggressively
•
Learn relaxation skills
•
Focus on problem-solving- she will learn ways of redirecting her energy to finding
solutions to a problem rather than getting angry.
Childhood physical and sexual abuse results in victims’ long-term psychological
effects and emotional trauma. It also leads to drug abuse, sleeping disorders, negative selfesteem, and depression (Mishra, 2016). Domestic violence also causes mental health
problems. Stephanie tends to experience post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD); therefore, to
reduce this, she should ;
•
Engage in hobbies
•
Request support from people who care about her or support groups of people who have
heard a similar experience.
•
Maintain a normal routine with similar activities.
•
Spend time with others.
•
Share your experience with close friends in a notepad or online journal.
•
Eat a balanced diet, participate in exercises, take enough rest, and avoid drugs.
3
4
Evidence-Base Best Practices
Drug abuse results in addiction which causes mental health disorders hence denial of
children’s custody to the victim since they tend to abuse their children. When deciding
whether a parent who was a victim of substance abuse should access custody of the children,
the judge may order drug testing. If the victim tests negative, she will get access to the child.
Therefore, in our case, Stephanie should ensure that she is drug-free. She should not get back
to indulging in drugs. Moreover, she should participate in therapy and counseling groups.
This will enable her to get her children back (Boss et al., 2016).
Poor housing and food insecurity are the most common indicators of unstable living
conditions. Poor housing or being homeless leads to mental problems caused by stress and
anxiety. Living in a crowded and noisy place also leads to a lack of sleep hence mental
disorders. It also leads to low self-esteem. Rasmussen help center, LLC will ensure that
Stephanie has a good housing system and enough food. This will help in maintaining her
mental stability. The organization will also educate her on some income-earning activities,
which will enable her to improve her living conditions.
Post-traumatic disorder (PTSD) occurs in persons with past traumatic events, leading
to fear, flashbacks, lack sleep, anxiety, and stress. It is caused by the experience of childhood
abuse, drug abuse, and lack of social support after an event. This disorder may be solved by
using anti-depressants, playing computer games, and counseling.
The role of supervision in assisting Stephanie
Supervision is a two-way practice that encourages and enhances good practice. This
will help Stephanie since a supervisor will ensure that Stephanie is drug-free, portrays anger
management skills, and better living conditions. Supervisory role equips me with keeping an
eye on Stephanie, monitoring the behavior, whether there are improvements, and comparing
the performance with time. With the skills of this role, I will be able to tell if Stephanie is
changing for the better or, the worse and can evaluate her (Ajzen, 2020).

Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace

Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace
Within the workplace, Ethical dilemmas are difficult situations requiring strong choices
and decisions to be made from multiple options. The options, however, do not solve the issues in
a manner corresponding to the ethical guidelines. Alternatively, the ethical dilemma may be a
conflict within alternatives in which whatever is done might not deter the ethical principles from
being compromised. Below are examples of ethical dilemmas, their potential long- and shortterm effects, and the ethical dilemmas’ solution.
Dilemma #1: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, a client makes sexual
advances towards you, and you begin to feel uncomfortable.
Sexual ethical dilemma in an organization between worker a client may be due to an
attraction within the opposite sides, and in most cases, it leads to harassment. The short-term
effect of the harassment may translate into a reduction of my confidence and self-esteem. The
long-term effect of this kind of situation may be loss of job, reduced job satisfaction and reduced
morale in the workplace (Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights, 2019). For the harasser, it
may lead to termination and their organizational involvement. Due to the severity of the effects
of the situation, it is mandatory to find a solution in case of such occurrences.
Solutions
Reporting the case to the managers in authority. The reporting will ensure that certain
actions are taken against the harassers and prevent future occurrences of such instances due to
the imposition of penalties or the individuals found with such acts (Minnesota Advocates for
Human Rights, 2019). For my case, I would report the client that harassed me to my managers
for responsive actions to be taken.
3
Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace
Developing an anti-harassment policy as a long-term solution to prevent future
occurrences. The policy should be in line with the respective penalty. The policies should then be
pinned at the entrance such that all the coming clients have a glance (Minnesota Advocates for
Human Rights, 2019). This will prove effective and prevent later occurrences like the one I
experienced.
Dilemma #3: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, you observe a client
exchanging money from his hand to another Human Services Professional.
In an organizational setup, money exchange between clients and organizational
professionals is an insinuation of corruption. This mainly occurs when the client prefers others or
does not want to follow the organizational protocols to find something. The money that the
clients provide in exchange for the unmentioned services is referred to as bribes.
Distortion of an organizational image is one of the short-term effects of corruption. The
distortion of the organizational image may result in a change of customers’ perspective of the
organization that, in the long run, may flee away from the customers (Michael, 2018). The
reduction of the organizational investments with an increased retrogressive tax is one of the longterm effects of corruption. The reduction of the investments is because the set target for a given
investment may not be achieved. After all, some provide the services without proper
accountability.
4
Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace
Solutions
An immediate report of the act to the manager. This makes it easier for the appropriate
actions towards the corrupt individuals rather than procrastination (Michael, 2018). In my case, I
would immediately report the act to my department manager to ensure that appropriate action
was taken for the corrupt individuals.
Review of the company policies and annexation of laws as long-term management of the
act. The company should have policies and enacted laws with penalties for any individual that
may be discovered to e corrupt. This will ensure that no other members of the organization will
be corrupt and reduce further instances of corruption (Michael, 2018). This step is critical in
reducing the retrogressive costs of the organizations.
Dilemma #5: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, you walk into a colleague’s
office while the colleague is down the hall making copies. A new client is seated next to your
colleague’s desk and computer, and another client’s confidential information is visible on
the screen.
A client seeing the confidential information of another is considered to e violating the
client’s privacy policies. One short-term effect of the violation of violation policy is loss of job
for the acting office colleague. The long-term effect of violation of the policy is the loss of
reputation of the individuals whose confidential information has been displayed and shared
(David, 2018). Additionally, the display of confidential information may lead to the loss of
personal information.
5
Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace
Solution
Not leaving any confidential information or document lying around. The information
displayed in documents should not be left when not in use (David, 2018). For this case, the
colleague should have his computer shut and only open it when actively engaging with a client,
which will not display information about other clients.
Anonymizing or confidential information. Anonymizing confidential information is key
in hiding the identity of the confidential information. In this way, even if the information gets out
mistakenly, no one can detect the owner whose information has been spilled (David, 2018). For
the above case, had the colleague anonymized the information, it would have created no
problems since it cannot be directed to a specific person.
Dilemma #7: While working at Rasmussen Help Center, LLC, you notice another Human
Services Professional partaking in inappropriate gossip with another co-worker and a
client.
In an organizational workplace, gossip is mainly caused by jealousy. The jealousy may
be due to inequities. For instance, it may be because an individual is greater or more successful
than you. The short-term effect of gossip in an organizational setting is hatred among the
members within the working place (Schwantes, 2017). The long-term effect in the workplace is
the erosion of trust and morale among the workers in the organization.
Solution
Setting examples. The Human Service Professional should set an example as a leader. By
so doing, the subordinates will actively follow, reducing the conflict in the workplace
(Schwantes, 2017). For this case, the professional out to have raised standards, which would be
critical in preventing the evil act.
6
Ethical Dilemma in the Workplace
Enaction of policies to curb workplace policy as the long-term remedy. For most
companies, protection of the member’s information is done through the policies. The policies are
so harsh and accompanied by penalties (Schwantes, 2017). In this way, even if the manager
involves gossip or discloses confidential information about the subordinates, he becomes the
subject o the law.

DAYS OF OUR PROFESSIONAL LIVES
In every work environment and department, communication goes a long way and saves
us a lot of misunderstandings in our day to day lives. It is safe to say that the importance of
communication cannot be overemphasized in our relationships at work. Professional
communication skills can be defined as ways we portray our views, opinion, and ideas in a work
setting respectfully and clearly while making sure our point is understood.
In a human resource setting for example, work emails, friendly reminders that express
sense of urgency, as well as scheduled meetings are proper ways to communicate and are
considered important because it helps employees know where they stand overall in the company
and to know what is in place to aid their performance. Human resource is also a huge part of any
company’s culture, and all employees need information on policies, regulations, and procedures
within the organization.
In addition, documentation of work is a necessity. It is important to document your work
with clients for reasons like keeping record, referring to past projects as well as evidence if
something goes wrong. Additional advantages of documentation in a timely manner can help
keep one organized and on track with accomplishing goals and completing tasks, it adds to
confidence in speaking on the particular project in the present and at a later time, and it serves as
proof of completion. In this scenario, being that there is an increased workload, if client services
are not documented in a timely manner, it can lead to complains from the client, lack of trust
from the clients, slacking in responsibilities, and confusion because of workload clutter.
Also, using an appropriate tone in oral and written communication is important and
should be practiced from the least employee to the highest employee. This fosters a healthy work
environment and gives everyone a sense of belonging. It also aids an excellent culture within the
company where everyone will be willing to put their best foot forward and complete tasks
efficiently.
In conclusion, based on the scenario, there are more responsibilities and being open to my
supervisor is compulsory. This will let him/her know the necessary details of the current client
services at hand and will also help with realistic expectations in completing tasks.

Personal/Professional Self and Self-Care
Human services are set of social assistance programs that include everything from the
basic needs of food and shelter to healthcare services and counseling services are offered through
the government and various nonprofit agencies. These programs are designed to contribute to the
welfare of the community through the delivery of services and help for individuals and their
families.
One group that I would like to provide human services are those women who have been
into alcohol addiction. It has been seen and proven in the past years how women play an
important role in the community. Women are the ones who manage the households and are great
leaders in the community. It has been a long mission for many to instill and advocate women
empowerment across the globe to acknowledge the contributions and importance of women.
That is why it is important for me to extend help and support to those women in need. Even
though women are said to be strong and independent, there are factors in their lives wherein they
encounter fallbacks and challenges. And during these times, women often resort to things that
can provide them calmness during a span of time but unfortunately becomes dangerous in the
long run. For example, when a woman becomes frustrated with her day, often she resorts to
drinking wine which later on becomes a habit and leads to her becoming an alcoholic. Studies
show that alcoholism affects the performance of employees. When women resort to alcohol as
their way of relaxation and leads to alcoholism, these people will find alcohol gets in their way in
focusing on work and may lead to them being fired. That is why it is important to extend help for
these people to put their lives back on the right track through providing meetings and counseling
to ensure that they do not drink anymore. With this, these people with an alcoholic problem will
Personal/Professional Self and Self-Care
3
find a way to be back with their job and even have other opportunities that will maximize their
potential.
It is said that to be bias is to be human. Biases are our own subjective world views and are
influenced and shaped by our experiences, beliefs, values, and education. In providing
professional human services, it is important to identify one’s personal bias to be able to provide
an impartial service to people. For example, if one is biased on the idea that women are weak, it
will compromise the amount and degree of help and support that one can provide for this group
if people. With that idea in mind, the help and support extended will not maximize the potential
of these women because he will think that being weak, women are incapable of doing great
things. The program will be more on pampering the group instead of boosting their confidence
into being able to create wonderful things.
Just like the rest of us, Human Services Professionals should maintain self-care. That
is, one should be able to deliberately do things for one’s mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. As service providers, it is important to have self-care because one’s performance and action
can be affected on whether he or she is contended and does not have any disappointments in his
or her life. It is later transmitted to the people we encounter creating a positive outlook in life. You
cannot advocate positivity and support to others when in fact you within yourself have been
struggling. The simplest way one can do to have self-care is to listen to what your body needs.
This may include having enough sleep and getting healthy foods. It is also helpful to maintain a
positive mindset and a grateful heart and with this, one can gradually achieve self-care. Concerning
how to prevent burnout, indeed the practice involving self-care may serve as the antidote towards
the instance of burnout altogether, where it combines the emotional, physical, and mental
exhaustion. Though employees in diverse fields often encounter burnout, (Smith, 2017) clarified
Personal/Professional Self and Self-Care
4
that service professionals have higher susceptibility due to the need for higher empathy levels
within their workplaces. Hence, these employees should strive towards reducing a lot of stress
within their minds that can be responsible for such instances or situations.
