This Continuous Assessment Test consists of 2 different parts.
The first part is based on 15 statements and students must answer whether this is true
or false and justify their decision according to the views and analysis offered in the
prescribed mandatory readings. Therefore, they have to briefly explain why they affirm
the statement is true or false. Answers should be between 40 words (per question).
Please note that students’ answer should be based on the mandatory readings of Unit 1.
In the second part, students must answer 5 short questions related to the mandatory
readings of Unit 1. Students’ answers should be between 150 words (per question).
Please note that answers should be based on the mandatory readings of Unit 1.
Students can also use other materials, provided they are properly quoted.
Objectives and competencies
At the end of this unit you should be able to:
– Define and discuss the basic concepts of public diplomacy, how its practice is
evolving and how it differs from traditional
diplomacy;
– Explain the distinction between public diplomacy and related activities, such as
nation branding, propaganda, cultural relations, public relations and lobbying;
– Define, and explain, the relationship between public diplomacy and cultural
diplomacy;
– Describe the historical development of cultural diplomacy and the impact of
technological and societal change;
– Analyse current practice in cultural diplomacy;
Formal Issues
The estimated learning time is 25 hours. It includes reading the required materials and
answering the test questions. However, dedication may vary depending on the previous
knowledge, skills and personal and professional circumstances of each student.
Students should upload their coursework to the course platform by midnight on the
deadline date (Barcelona time). Students may request an exceptional extension of the
deadline due to unforeseen circumstances. However, this will ineluctably lead to a
deduction of your mark.
You must include your full name in the upper part of the document. Please do not
include the instructions of this exercise. Your document must only include your answers
to this exercise.
Marking criteria
Following Appendix A of the ‘Student Handbook’ we will evaluate:
– Task fulfilment
– Knowledge
– Analysis and development of an argument
– Structure and presentation
– Use of sources and data collection (see Appendix A of the ‘Student Handbook’)
CAT 1 counts for 30% of the Final Mark. It will be graded out of 30 points. Each T/
F question is worth 1 point and each short answer is worth 2 points.
Part 1 accounts for 20 points. Part 2 accounts for 10 points.
The grades for CAT 1 will be allocated as follows:
– A : 27 – 30 points
– B : 20 – 26 points
– C+ : 15 – 19 points
– C- : 6 – 14 points
– D : 0 – 5 points
