MHA-Communications Charting ExerciseInstructions
You have learned about the three primary styles of communication and have identified your
primary style of communications. Now is the time to put the theory in practice.
In this exercise, you will observe the people with whom you work to determine their
communication style. As you interact with co-workers, subordinates, and supervisors, your goal
is to chart:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
The name of the person whom you observe
This person’s primary communication style
Notes on the conversation/meeting/your observation
Indication if this communication was effective or non-effective
Why the communication was effective or non-effective
The purposes of this exercise are to:
•
•
•
•
Enlighten you about your communication style as in you interact with others to improve
your effectiveness
Develop your communication and leadership styles
Learn the types of communication styles to help you know how to better interact and lead
others in different situations
Possibly identify a business problem that you can work on for the semester
The Communications Chart is provided to assist you with this assignment. This exercise
consists of identifying three other people’s communication styles. You also will chart/document
the conversation you had with the person whether it was in a meeting, giving direction,
discussing a business problem regarding health administration, receiving direction, or providing
some other care or service. After providing a synopsis of the communication, you must then
indicate if the communications was effective or non-effective and indicate your reasoning why.
As you will read on the chart, space is provided for each communications event. Please indicate
the date of the event and your observations in the field provided on the chart. Additionally, the
chart provides more than you need for recording details. Observations must be written in full
sentences and paragraphs. You must provide support as to your reasoning as to why you identify
the person’s style as you did using the information you learned in class. The Communications
Notes field is set to wrap the text as you type.
When you have completed the exercise, please upload it to the Canvas assignment and name it
using the following format:
