Paper #2
A Professional Code of Conduct
This paper will include a set of five to ten principles that, combined together, provide a code of conduct for YOU in the role YOU plan to fulfill in your professional life. You may focus on a code of conduct as the professional you will be or you may address a code of conduct you will share with your staff or co-workers in your professional role, i.e. owning a retail company, managing a veterinary clinic, etc. You should begin by researching codes of conduct that exist for people in your position, either by personally inquiring or by doing online research. You may use some of these in your code of conduct but you must add your own to put your stamp on it. The sources you find should be referenced appropriately. Please list this set of codes that you create for yourself in the introduction or just after the introduction so that they are easily identified.
Once you have established the codes of conduct, you must discuss what ethical theory (or theories) apply or reject each code. This should be the main focus of the paper. You must discuss at least 3 separate ethical theories.
Within the paper, you may also discuss the reasons for your code of conduct choices indicating the overall intent of your code in its entirety.
THE MAIN POINT OF THE PAPER IS TO APPLY ETHICAL THEORY. PLEASE USE RUBRIC AS YOU WRITE YOUR PAPER FOR POINT ALLOCATIONS. YOU MUST APPLY 3 ETHICAL THEORIES TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT YOU ESTABLISH.
This means thoroughly defining each theory with at least 2 separate, credible sources and then step by step explaining how the issue applies or rejects an ethical theory.
Use Paper #2 Worksheet (due FRI 3/27) to help organize. This paper length and word count shall including the actual Code of Conduct. Paper #2 is due on 5/3 by 11:59 pm in the Paper Drop Box. NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED!
Minimum 6 philosophical sources on Ethical Theory NOT the “topic” (DO NOT use Pp slides, videos or the Open Web). Only use the Shafer-Landau textbook and the CPP online library database with keyword search ex: “Ethical Egoism” or “Kantian Ethics” etc.

Paper #2 Worksheet
1. Describe your future career objective. If you want to own a business, please describe the type of business.
I plan to own a restaurant in the future. Owning a restaurant will help fulfill my career objective because it has always been a great joy seeing people living a healthy life. My restaurant would focus mostly on providing natural foods and gym services to its customers. To remain relevant in business, I would embrace business ethics because ethical leadership creates customer loyalty. The ethical codes that I would embrace are discussed below.
2. Create and briefly explain the code of conduct you are creating for yourself in this future career or the code of conduct for the company you intend to own and run (should be approx. 5-10 codes with a brief explanation):
1. Honesty: Honesty is a great aspect of moral character that creates a strong bond between a business and its customers. Practicing honesty creates trust in your customers and a positive image of the business (Airlines, 2018).
2. Integrity: Integrity is the virtue of standing with the truth and being uncompromising when dealing with situations. Integrity helps people rise above hypocrisy in the workplace. Having an integral employee would help my business to serve its customers better.
3. Fairness: Fairness is the act of treating everyone equally. Treating all your employees fairly creates teamwork in the business because everyone is engaged in the operations of the business (Halinen & Jokela, 2016). Engagement motivates employees to improve their output.
4. Promise keeping: Keeping promises is a moral obligation of every business. You should avoid being casual with promises because failing to fulfill them shows a lack of commitment.
5. Law-abiding: Every business needs to abide by the legal framework of the country. Law creates a legal business environment. Being law-abiding improves the overall image of the business.
3. Which ethical theory categories do the codes in #2 above fall into (please discuss 3)? Remember you do not have to relate every code to every ethical theory you chose. However, you should relate/apply each code to at least one of these ethical theories listed in a, b and c below so that at the end of the paper, you have applied each code to at least one ethical theory once. You may pick from:
Hedonism
Divine Command Theory
Natural Law Theory
Ethical Egoism
(NOT Psychological Egoism)
Consequentialism or
Utilitarianism
Kantian Ethics
Virtue Ethics
Social Contract Theory
Ethical Relativism (can include
Cultural Relativism)
1. 1st Ethical Theory:________________ virtue ethics __________________
i. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here:_____1,2_____
ii. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:
Honesty: It is the responsibility of every virtuous person to do the right thing. Telling the truth should be a moral obligation for everyone.
Integrity: It is a moral obligation of every person to practice integrity everywhere. People do not have to observe integrity only when it benefits them.
2. 2nd Ethical Theory: _____________ utilitarianism theory ______________
i. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here:______3________
ii. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:
Fairness: According to utilitarianism, actions should be taken to achieve a common good for the majority. Being fair gives everyone equal treatment to benefit from the organization (Halinen & Jokela, 2016).
3. 3rd Ethical Theory: _______________ Social Contract Theory ________________
i. Which specific code(s) does this relate to? List the code # here: ___4,5__________
ii. Briefly discuss how this theory relates to one or more of your codes in #2 above:
Promise keeping: When you make a promise as a business person, you enter into a contract with society. It is not enforced by the laws of the land but you are obligated to fulfill it since you made it to the society.
Law-abiding: As a business, the law regulates conducting business. However, there are chances of undercutting and avoiding these laws. Therefore, it is only good to abide by social contract so that you can follow the law for the benefit of society.

Guidelines
Ethical arguments included in any chapter can be used in your papers. I am not looking for your opinion; I am looking for an ethical viewpoint. You can include any relevant personal experiences, graphs, charts, and any other information that may help you describe your moral dilemma. Be sure to include a minimum of 6 total sources using APA guidelines and include them in your references and citations to help you highlight your ethical theory application. Writing is expected to include critical thinking about how ethical theory and information from your references relate to each assignment topic.
Use “Google Scholarly” or the “Library Database” for additional sources (See “Research Guides” tab on the left column in Bb). Your sources MUST be credible. Do not use Wikipedia, dictionary, Pp, videos or questionable websites (points will be taken off).
DO NOT USE THE OPEN WEB.
All papers must be grammatically correct and all spelling must be correct. Please use spelling/grammar check before you submit and carefully proof for errors NOT caught previously.
See Rubric on left Tab in Bb for writing requirements. You will be completing 1 term paper. You are required to turn in your papers by the date/time listed in the Paper Drop Box tab. You will be able to see your percent similarity. If you submit early and it is over 30% you may resubmit your paper in the same box by the original due date/time (you will only have two total submissions per paper).
Plagiarism or # similarity above 30% will be penalized with a 0 on the paper. Plagiarism includes copying and pasting from another source, yourself or student paper as well as turning in another student’s paper that has been turned in before. This is why you need to review the APA book so that you cite correctly. If over 30%, please paraphrase more, direct quote less (or not at all) and include more of your own thought to reduce.

Be sure to include a minimum of 6 total philosophical sources using APA guidelines and include them in your references and citations to help you highlight your ethical theory application. Writing is expected to include critical thinking about how ethical theory and information from your references relate to your chosen topic.
A really good way to appraoch each critical thinking section is to 1.) clearly explain/define the ethical theory you will be applying with 2 separate sources on ethical theory. These should be philosophical in nature (No Open Web and not on topic). Then bring in the topic you selected and analyze that ethical dilemma from the perspective of that ethical theory. (see RUBRIC)
All papers must be grammatically correct and all spelling must be correct. Please use spelling/grammar check before you submit and carefully proof for errors NOT caught previously.
All papers must be submitted through Blackboard in “Paper Drop Box” tab by clicking on the turnitin link ON TIME. DO NOT EMAIL FINAL PAPERS to professor’s email. Do NOT wait until the last minute to submit. Sometimes, students encounter issues in submission – no exceptions for late submissions, if you have difficulty submitting, it’s probably YOUR computer. Do not email the professor with technical submission problems. If you are having a problem, consider using a computer on campus.
Do’s and Dont’s:
Do use citations that are philosophical in nature and support the definition of the ethical theory you are applying
Do NOT use citations on topic of GMOs, etc.
Do include two citations minimum per ethical theory section. Must have a total of 6 unique sources for the paper. You may re-use sources throughout the paper BUT you will only be given credit for them once.
Do use the Shafer-Landau textbook and the CPP online library (philosophical article search by keyword ex: ethical egoism, social contract theory, etc.)
Do NOT use the Open Web for citations
Do cite only 1 source per sentence
Do not cite 2 or more sources in one sentence. Split citations from different sources into their own sentence to make it clear what content in that sentence relates to the source.
Do stick to discussing/applying 1 ethical theory in each section. Resist the urge to bounce back and forth and discuss a different ethical theory in another’s critical thinking section.
Do follow the RUBRIC
Even though APA does not require, I appreciate including the page # after last name and year in the in-text citations.
