There are obviously multiple ways to set up theequations to arrive at the correct answers (I saw many
different examples in the homeworks I received). The
following slides show how I chose to do it. What’s
important is that you understand how to arrive at the
correct answers.

NOx Emission Factors
A boiler combusts 50 million cubic feet of natural gas and 200,000 gallons of No. 2 fuel
oil per year. How much NOx does this boiler emit in a year? (The emission factor for
NOx from combusting natural gas is 100 lbs NOx for every million cubic feet of natural gas
combusted. The emission factor for NOx for combusting No. 2 fuel oil is 20 lbs NOx for
every 1,000 gallons of No. 2 fuel oil combusted).
50 M cu ft x 100 lbs NOx = 5,000 lbs NOx

200 K gal x 20 lbs NOx = 4,000 lbs NOx

Material Balance Example
A painting operation uses the following in their spray booth per year:
Blue Paint: 10,000 gal with a density of 9 lbs/gal
5% solids and 15% VOCs
Red Paint: 5,000 gal with a density of 10 lbs/gal
10% solids and 8% VOCs
Green Paint: 14,000 gal with a density of 12 lbs/gal
20% solids and 15% VOCs
75% of the paint reaches its target (25% misses) and APC equipment
captures 95% of the solids and 50% of the VOCs. How many lbs of
total solids (particulates) and VOCs do they emit per year?

10,000 gal lacquer x 9 lbs = 90,000 lbs lacquer

90,000 lbs lacquer x 0.05 lbs solids = 4,500 lbs solids

90,000 lbs lacquer x 0.12 lbs VOCs = 10,800 lbs VOCs

Solids (Particulates)
4,500 lbs solids + 5,000 lbs solids + 33,600 lbs solids = 43,100 lbs solids
yr
yr
yr
yr
75% of the solids remains on the item being painted so only 25% is wasted
into the air therefore:
43,100 lbs solids x 0.25 lbs waste solids = 10,775 lbs waste solids
yr
lbs solids
yr
95% of the waste solids are captured by the APC equipment so only 5% are
emitted therefore:
10,775 lbs waste solids x 0.05 lbs particulates emitted = 538.75 lbs particulates emitted
yr
lbs waste solids

VOCs
10,800 lbs VOCs + 4,000 lbs VOCs + 25,200 lbs VOCs = 40,000 lbs VOCs

Unlike the solids, where 75% remains on the item being painted, ALL of
the VOCs outgas as the item dries so all enter the air (as does the water
in the paint, which doesn’t concern us, which evaporates). Since the
APC equipment captures 50% of the VOCs:
40,000 lbs VOCs x 0.50 lbs VOCs emitted = 20,000 lbs VOCs emitted

A coating facility uses 150,000 gallons of clear lacquer/year with a density of 10 lbs/gal in its spray
booth. The lacquer is 20% solids and 10% VOCs. 90% of the lacquer in the spray booth reaches its
target item. A baghouse effectively captures 80% of the solids and carbon adsorbs 60% of the VOCs.
How many LBS/year of both solids and VOCs are emitted? (Show your work)
