CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE
Military Sex Offender Reporting Act of 2015 (MSORA) was an interesting topic to say the lease. I think that military members have a lot of stereotypes but “sexual offender” is one that is not widely known to the public. There is a notion in the military that states, “Handle things at the lowest level”. When this statement is used, it is mainly for disputes, alcohol related incidents, or even physical altercations which seemed to be swept under the rug. The one incident that is a main concern is sexual assault. Military members until 2015 could commit a sexual crime and be discharged without any record of this incident transferred over to the public if the member did not register in the appropriate amount of time. This led to about 20-10% of discharged veterans being unregistered. This policy was a direct influence of the civilian law for sex offenders and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The MSORA eliminated this issue and helps track these members prior to being discharged if not handled but military court martial.
