· Discuss connections to the content of this week’s readings.
· What role does a nurse leader play regarding a team’s level of functionality? What place do norms and roles have in teams? How can nurse leaders impact them?
· Observe a nurse leader intervening in a work-related conflict. Using Box 13-1, “Guidelines for Navigating Conflict,” on page 205 of Effective Leadership and Management in Nursing, evaluate how well the leader incorporated and utilized the guidelines in navigating the conflict process. What was the outcome? Did using these techniques produce a positive outcome? If the outcome was negative, what could have been done differently to improve the outcome?
· Interview nurse leaders about their experiences in conflict management. Find out whether they utilized the guidelines and draw connections to the outcomes.
· Find opportunities to use the Littlejohn and Dominici (2007) model when addressing your own conflicts with others.
· Describe approaches that can be used to manage conflict.
· Describe strategies to manage staff with problem behaviors such as bullying, incivility, horizontal violence, or substance abuse problems.
· Identify examples of disasters that require preparation.
· Determine emergency preparedness for hospitals and discuss staff requirements to respond to emergencies.
· Research your organization’s emergency response plans. Are the plans comprehensive and do they cover a range of emergencies? Are there detailed contingency plans for quick mobilization? How educated is the staff on what their role will be in an emergency situation?
