Opinion Paper
The Opinion Paper is the only paper you will write this semester that you will be
able to write in the first person. Pick a topic that you feel passionate about. For
example, Gun Control or some controversial topic that you can take a stand for or
against. If you can’t think of a topic, watch the news or read the newspaper, there is
usually something that will get you upset or emotional that you can write about, but
remember this is not just an informative paper, you are wanting to present an
opinion/argument.

1-Topic : Legalization of physician-assisted suicide within the society.
Thesis statement:
With the increase in the rates of diseases that have endless pain and have no cure, such as
cancer, physician-assisted suicide should be legalized to allow suffering patients within society
to exercise their freedom of making decisions about their lives legally. The patient’s decision
should be based on the pain they are going through and no hope of the recovery process.
2- Thesis statement for the article:
According to Roberts (2018), Physician-assisted suicide should be legalized because the
patient is not committing suicide but requesting the end of a chronic medical condition that is
causing a lot of pain to the patient and depression to the family members. The focus of the
argument should be saving the patient from endless pain and not terming it as suicide according
to what the critics are doing on the matter of physician-assisted suicide. There is always a
mandatory consult between the physician and the patient to prove that the pain as a result of
the disease has no control, leaving no option but to grant the patient the wish to request
physician-assisted suicide.

Legalization of physician-assisted suicide within the society
Thesis statement
With the increase in the rates of diseases that have endless pain and have no cure, such as
cancer, physician-assisted suicide should be legalized to allow suffering patients within society
to exercise their freedom of making decisions about their lives legally. The patient’s decision
should be based on the pain they are going through and no hope of the recovery process.
Purpose of the paper
The purpose of the paper is to provide evidence and argument why physician-assisted
suicide should be legalized. The discussion helps to give a solution to the current dilemma on
physician-assisted suicide where some support and others critique the move to legalize
physician-assisted suicide. Therefore, the debate provides the benefits of legalizing physicianassisted suicide to answer the existing dilemma.
Reason for legalizing physician-assisted suicide.
Physician-assisted suicide should be legalized because it helps in reducing anxiety and
depression among patients suffering from a persistent disease. Considering that the condition has
no cure and has more pain, the best way of helping the patient is through physician-assisted

suicide. Continuous depression can result in dangerous trauma; therefore, controlling helps the
patients (Jansen, Wall, & Miller, F2019).
Through the implementation of physician-assisted suicide, it helps the patients to plan,
especially family heads within the society. Patients will understand and be aware of their death
hence plan for those who are left behind considering that the disease they are suffering from has
no cure so that they can avoid the pain they are going through as well as living behind organized
family members and friends (McFarland et al. 2019).
The cost of medication can be reduced by implementing physician-assisted suicide, which
reduces the burden the family members go through. While trying to maintain patients suffering
from persistent diseases such as cancer, the family end up selling properties and taking loans to
sustain their family members without hope of recovery; therefore; physician-assisted suicide will
help family members save these costs and save the patient from the endless pain (Buckley,
2018).
In conclusion, those against the legalization of physician-assisted suicide argue that ending
a lie is morally wrong according to religion, where life is considered supreme and should be
protected by everyone at all times. This argument does not change the belief that physicianassisted suicide should be legalized because before it is approved, there is a need for patient
consent and support that the patient is suffering from pain. There is no hope for recovery,
according to medical reports. By considering the medical report on endless pain and the patient
willingly requesting physician-assisted suicide, legalizing it becomes the best option.
