Essential ideas to consider while designing
Strategy: Organizational design should enable a company to achieve its strategic plans. The plans are made to accomplish company’s vision which in turn fulfils the company’s mission. The mission is a business’ calling — its purpose. Company’s strategies make efforts to get to its vision, and the organizational structure should be a foundation for that effort.
Environmental Factors: No organization design can ever afford to ignore the environment where employees work. An uncertain, erratic, unstable environment demands adjustability, versatility and interdepartmental collaboration. A fixed, adamant structure would restrict the swiftness and receptivity of its constituents. Designers should take all these factors and design a parallel structure, which compresses management levels and decentralizes decision-making. A stable environment, on the other hand, can allow centralized authority, well-spelt out tasks and a specified structure with its vertical tiers of increasing power. (Johnson, S. 2018, April 05)
Company age: At the inception of company’s life, because of its small size it can have structural attributes of flexibility and responsiveness but as it matures it needs to have well-defined rules, policies, authority -responsibility relationships, control systems and command chains. Organizational design role is to adjust it to its new need of restructuring.
Company Size: Small businesses need not have well-defined roles because of the overlapping of roles, and they don’t write a lot of rules. There is no need to get into well-defined roles because of its small size. Large organizations, on the other hand, need more monitoring and vigilance. A rigid and well-defined structure creates clear accountability and responsibility and is, therefore, appropriate for larger organizations having many employees.
Structural Designs: Functional and divisional structures are commonly used structures. The functional structure is designed as per functions like manufacturing, selling, marketing, finance This kind of structure although leads to more efficient operations but creates boundaries between departments. The divisional structure is organized on the basis of product, customer or geography and these divisions have their own production, marketing, purchase functionalities This makes divisions more centralized and receptive but have the burden of adding duplication functions.
