Please do your best in this lab, if you have any questions please let me know. I need to get a full mark in this lab.
Take your time doing the work.
GLY3402C Structural Geology Lab Final Project
Fall 2020
Brad Mack
Part 1: Using the first map, calculate the strike and dip of Tr. This is a 3-point problem. Be sure to show
ALL work. It is probably easier to print it and do it on paper. If you print it, include your marked map
when submitting. If you do not print it, include the annotated PDF showing the steps you took to get the
answer. You should be able to do this in Acrobat or Foxit. If you need help annotating PDF’s, let me
know. Either way you do it you need to show me all the math you did to get there as well. You must
include both the map and math to get credit.
Part 2: Using the second map, construct a Pi diagram using all 16 strikes and dips west of the Mirkwood
Fault. Strike and dip values are given at each symbol, so you do not have to use a protractor to measure
strike. Remember, right hand rule. Give the plunge and trend of the folds that you got using the Pi
diagram. If you were to estimate the plunge and trend just by looking at the map, would these values
line up with your estimate? Why or why not?
Part 3: Construct a cross section along the A-A’ line. Use the list given in lab 7 as a reference for what to
include. Everything on that list will count towards your grade. The A-A’ line is 4 km long. Use the strike
and dip calculated in part 1 for Tr and Tg. Assume Thd is horizontal. Be sure to show the sense of slip on
the fault.
Important Notes: You are permitted to consult each other as I have no way of keeping you from doing
so. However, this is an individual assignment. You must turn in your project with all work provided. If I
catch anyone copying another’s answers, you will get a 0. If you do not show your work, you will get a 0.
There will be no tolerance for cheating. Do your own work. I also need to be able to follow your work, so
please organize it. The full map is available on Canvas and I suggest consulting it as you work through
these for a broader context. This is due at 11:59 pm on 23 Nov 2020. Late work will not be accepted.
You have a little over a week to complete this. Do not wait until the last minute. I want to get this done
before the rest of your finals so that you have more time to focus on them. Start early, take your time,
and double check everything. Good luck.
