Assignment – gemstones
In the lecture we looked at a few minerals and their
properties, such as hardness, lustre, cleavage and colour.
Throughout history certain minerals have been highly valued
because of some particular property, like colour or
translucence; sometimes it is for religious or mystical
reasons.
When we use the term gem or gemstone we are referring to
those minerals and often the common name of the gemstone
is not the scientific mineral name. In some cases a single
mineral may have several different gemstone names
depending upon the colour.
In this assignment you are going to take a close look at one particular gemstone; your birthstone.
There are a lot of commercial sites dealing in gems but we will start off with one in particular.
Follow the link to the gemstone website (http://www.bernardine.com/gemstones/).
We are interested in the section to the right with the different categories of birthstones.
Modern Birthstones; Mystical Birthstones; Ayurvedic Birthstones; Traditional Birthstones;
Astrological Birthstones (for the new-agers in the class); Planetary Birthstones; Talismanic
Birthstones; and Birthstones of Ancient Cultures.
Take a few minutes to explore the site and look at the different groups of gemstones. Be sure to scroll
down the page to see them all.
What do you do?
Find your birthstone on one of the charts and then answer the following questions about it. Depending
upon your birthstone you may find most of the information on this site, or you may have to search the
internet. Also read Box 2.2 pg. 52 in your textbook.
Questions:
1.
When is your birthday? Just give the month or the Zodiac sign.
(I can’t believe I just asked “What’s your sign?”)
2.
Which category of birth stones did you choose?
3.
What is your birthstone (there may be several for that particular month so just pick one)?
4.
What is the mineral name of your birthstone?
(This is the scientific mineralogical name – like tourmaline; in some cases it may be a mineral
group. There are a few where the name of the gem and the mineral are the same).
5.
What is the chemical formula of your birthstone?
(e.g. H2O)
6.
What are the names of the elements in the chemical formula?
(e.g. hydrogen and oxygen)
7.
What is its hardness on Moh’s scale of hardness?
8.
What type of lustre does it have?
9.
What is its colour?
10.
What is an interesting or unique fact about your stone that you have found out?
Be sure you list the source of your information – if you do not I will give you zero for this question).
Include an image of an example of this gemstone. Be sure to site your source.
