GEOL 325: Stratigraphy & Sedimentary BasinsRichard Alley visit, Fall 2021
Arguably, doing important science and communicating about it e ectively are some of the greatest
contributions to society. Dr. Richard Alley’s achievements in both realms are amongst the best in those
endeavors. We are thus incredibly fortunate to have some personal time with one of Earth’s most
important and in uential climate scientists.
Our goal in advance of Dr. Alley’s class visit on Wednesday, Nov. 10, is to come up with a series of
questions to incite meaningful discussion between him and us. This requires two things of each of you:
1. Review Dr. Alley’s science and presentations and devise questions pertinent to one or more of the
following topics:
1.1.
the science of his papers or presentations
1.2.
how to use sedimentary geology to understand climate and climate change
1.3.
how to communicating science e ectively
1.4.
pursuing careers related to climate or climate change
1.5.
how to navigate or address climate change as a science student or scientist
1.6.
how to navigate or address climate change as a citizen
1.7.
his personal or scienti c or professional background
2. Vote on your and your fellow classmates’ questions to develop a hierarchy of questions to ask Dr. Alley
during his visit.
