Part 1: Lesson Plan (points listed for each item below = 20 points total)
1. Participant details (E.g., age, gender, cultural background, other details related to their ability to perform the task). (1 pt)
2. Referring to definitions from class (& including APA in-text citations when appropriate), describe:
a. Vygotsky’s concept of the Internalization process and the two types of cultural tools that children learn to use through this process. Provide the definition and an example of each type of cultural tool. (5 pts)
b. Vygotsky’s concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). (2 pts)
c. Vygotsky’s concept of the Scaffolding teaching technique (describe the 2 steps in this technique). (2pts)
3. You will need to choose a task, activity, game, or techniques to solve a problem to teach your participant (e.g., how to tie their shoe, how to be polite, how to cook something, how to play a game, how to read, etc.). This should be new to the participant, and should fall within their ZPD: (4 pts)
a. Which task/activity/game/problem will you choose to teach your participant? Why?
b. How will you be sure that the task is novel (i.e., new) for that participant? (I.e., What steps will you take? (E.g., will you ask their parents, teachers, or observe similar behavior, etc.?)
c. How will you assess the participant’s ZPD for the task/activity/game/problem you chose?
d. List some cultural tools that you think you will be passing along to your participant during this task? Be sure to clarify which ones are Technical Tools and which ones are Psychological Tools, and/or which ones could be both.
4. List THREE (3) of the “specific scaffolding strategies” (reviewed in class) that you think you could use to teach your participant your activity. For each strategy: define the strategy and then describe HOW you might use that strategy to teach your participant the new skill or piece of knowledge. Include APA in-text citations when appropriate (6pts)
5. Reference(s): please do not forget to list the full APA reference for any sources used (this should include the textbook, as you are instructed to cite it instead of my lecture slides) at the end of this assignment.
