Humanities 130 Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography is an important assignment in its own right. First, you should know that it does not replace the documentation requirements for the paper you are writing—for example, if you are doing an APA paper, you still need to provide in-text citations of your sources and their dates of publication, along with a References page or pages. But what the annotated bibliography does is highlight the importance of your sources and allow you to comment on them. And the fact that it’s due earlier than the paper itself means that you will have to complete the vast majority of your research before the paper due date (this is designed to help you avoid the trap of procrastination).
When it comes to the annotations themselves, I recommend you write two paragraphs per source. (See me if you would like to deviate from this format.) In the first paragraph, summarize the source; in the second paragraph, talk about how and why the source proved useful. In that second paragraph, it is also common to rank the source in some way or compare it to your other sources. For example, I have seen students write concluding sentences such as, “This was my most useful source,” or “This source was the least useful for me, but it did prove valuable in explaining…..” Anyway, I hope you get the idea. The reader interested in building upon your research would like to know about your source and about how useful you found it to be. The annotated bibliography accomplishes that. Try online websites for more information—for example, the Purdue Owl website has examples of annotated bibliographies with one, two, or three-paragraph annotations.
To give yourself the best chance at a high grade on this assignment, make sure that the annotated bibliography does not deviate substantially from the research that informs your finished paper. The annotated bibliography has the same minimum number of sources as your paper, although you may certainly add a few final sources while doing last-minute rewrites or tune-ups on your paper. So, for example, you could have an annotated bibliography with eight sources, seven of which actually make it into the paper (with one source informing your understanding of the paper topic but not really “fitting” the paper, thus being excluded); in addition, you might find two more good sources in the final days before the paper is due, leaving you with a total of nine sources in your list of Works Cited or References. Of course spelling and grammar will also count, just as if you were writing paragraphs for an essay. See me if you have any questions about this assignment.
