Book
Steinberg, S.L. & Steinberg, S.J. (2015). GIS Research Methods. ESRI Press, NY, NY.
B. Trails
1. Start a new map. Add the layer “NH Recreational Trails” by New Hampshire GRANIT GIS
Clearinghouse, 10/11/19. Look at the table for the layer; it shows the minimum elevation, maximum
elevation, and average slope… among other items.
1. Who COMPILED the trails data for the NH Recreational Trails layer?
2. Who OWNS the layer?
3. What is the name of the LONGEST trail listed in the layer?
4. How long is that trail?
5. What is the name of the trail with the highest peak elevation?
6. What is the name of the town that trail is in?
7. What is the name of the trail with the STEEPEST maximum slope?
8. How steep is that steepest slope?
9. That steepest trail starts and ends in approximately the same location as a second trail.
a. What is the name of that second trail that starts and ends near the trail with the
steepest maximum slope?
b. How steep is that second trail?
You are going hiking with your friends who are just beginners. So you would like to find a trail with a
maximum elevation of between 2000feet and 2500feet, a length of more than 2.5 miles (13,200 feet –
can’t go too easy on them!), but less than 4 miles (21,120 feet – don’t want it to be a death march!).
The trail should be in the southern half of the state (hint: Use the “use map extent” button to your
advantage – this is a big layer and will take forever otherwise).
10. What is the trail name you will recommend to your friends?
11. What town is that trail in?
12. Write a few sentences to “sell” the trail to them.
C. Book question
Figure 3.4 on page 64 of the Steinberg and Steinberg book that we have been reading for class describes
a recommended process to go from a beginning research question from “concept to preparation for
analysis” in an exploratory study. So far in class, we have only been doing steps 2 and 3.
13. List the four steps suggested by Steinberg and Steinberg to start an exploratory process.
14. Explain the importance of the fourth step: “Ground truth your data”.
15. What would the NEXT steps be? In other words, once you have your data, what do you do with
it? Please give 3 distinct next steps that you would do after the steps listed in Figure 3.4.
