EXERCISE: BOOK FORMATTING, PART II
1. Check that all headings and subheadings are formatted with heading styles. These headings would also get Heading 1: List of Illustrations, Executive Summary, Works Cited / References, Index, and Notes. After formatting these with Heading 1, re-center the front and back matter headings.

. Insert any graphics where you want them.
Compress and crop them if necessary.
Create a caption for them using the caption tool.

3. Go to the Front Matter pages you created.
Create your cover page.

4. On the Table of Contents page, go to REFERENCES—Table of Contents
Format your Table of Contents.
5. On the List of Illustrations page, go to REFERENCES– Insert Table of Figures.
Format your List of Illustrations.
6. Go to the Executive Summary page.
Write a 2-3 paragraph summary of your report.
See structure in printout.
7. If you have not done so already, create your Works Cited or References page.
Single space entries, double space between entries, use a hanging indent for all entries.
Caution: The automatic bibliography creator usually has errors.
Check with the Purdue OWL.

Create an index of at least ten words/phrases.
See printout and video for instructions.
Go to index page and insert index.
REFERENCES—Insert Index.
Format index.
9. If you don’t have the word NOTES on the last page, create a blank page with the title of NOTES.
Format with Heading 1 and center.
10. Continue revision of text.
11. When this draft is as perfect as you can possibly achieve, save it as
lastnamefirstinitial_confdraft_3309xxx.
12. Submit it for the conference exercise.
13. Sign up for a conference next week.
Go to the Calendar in the Global Menu on the left.
You should see conference times that are available.
Click on one and add your name.
14. At your appointment time, call me (254-433-3938).
Have your report draft open on a computer screen.
Also, have a printed copy to make notes on.
Make sure you are in a quiet environment.
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A CONFERENCE UNTIL YOU HAVE A COMPLETE DRAFT.
