What are the advantages of using a systematic approach to work through research problems from example below?
The study I chose was “Power and Control, Domestic Violence in America”. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods. This documentary set out to show that by using what has now been named the “Duluth Model, that domestic violence could be reduced by taking the focus off of the victim and placing the work and blame where it rightly deserves to be, on the offender” (Callaghan, K. A. 2012).The victims involved in these models were consulted on policies and procedures that would allow for mandatory sentences for abusers and provided court ordered counseling and support for the offender so that they could better understand why they chose to exert power and dominance over their partners.
The Hypothesis is that by changing the method in which domestic violence is handled from the initial policies and procedures, to consequences, the number of domestic violence cases would decrease, and the number of repeat offenders would drastically decrease. The other side of that coin is that the victims feel that they have a voice in the process and are therefore empowered to take more control over the things that happen to them after being victimized. The data was collected by following and interviewing couples and their families who were going through domestic violence proceedings.
I think this process can be used in other court room cases because once the focus is placed back on the offender it takes away the power and ultimately empowers the victim. For example, if this were used in cases where there was something stolen. If the victim was given the opportunity to say I would like my property back or free labor until the value of my property is paid off, then maybe robberies would decrease, and the victim would feel some sense of redemption.
