Your Task
In this module, you’ve become familiar with your first big chart type: the bar chart. Bar charts, including their stacked and grouped forms, can build a strong foundation for drawing insights from data. You’ve also learned a little bit about what motivates the use of data visualizations, including qualities that make for effective visualizations.
In this SkillBuilder, you will use Tableau to explore distributional statistics about the UNESCO World Heritage Center’s
World Heritage List (Links to an external site.)
. The list includes sites around the world both natural and man-made that the WHC has deemed of high importance to humanity’s culture as a whole.

It’s really good to see your progress in the course. You have a clear understanding of how to add and remove dimensions from the details mark, and you know how to create a side-by-side bar chart. You also know how to sort bar chart data, how to use filters, as well as change the scale of the X and Y axis – your list of skills is growing! You can download the solutions sheet (by navigating to the bottom of the course) and compare it to your answers. Keep up the good work!30 ptsPartial CreditGood effort! You’ve now practiced creating side-by-side bar charts in Tableau. You also better understand filters and chart sorting. You can download the solutions sheet (by navigating to the bottom of the course) and compare it to your answers. In the future, please try and attempt assignments ahead of time, and reach out through the Bot or take advantage of Study Hall hours if you get stuck or have questions. The Data Team is here to support you!20 ptsVery Partial CreditGood work submitting this assignment. I can see that you put in some effort to understand side-by-side bar charts, filters, sorting, and graph scales using Tableau. Keep up the practice as this topic will continue throughout the rest of the course and it will bring a stronger foundation as we continue to use Tableau. Don’t be discouraged if you weren’t able to answer all the questions correctly on this assignment! However, some of the Skill Builder questions were missing answers or sheets. I am giving you partial credit for effort. You can download the solutions sheet (by navigating to the bottom of the course) and compare it to what your answers. Assignment: UNESCO WHC Heritage List
1. On Sheet 1, create a bar chart that depicts the number of heritage sites by site type
(Field name = Category). You’ll notice three types of heritage sites: Cultural, Natural, and
Mixed. Your final graph should have one bar for each type of heritage site.
a. How many sites are there of each type?
2. On Sheet 2, create a bar chart that counts the number of heritage sites by region (Field
name = Region En).
a. Which region has the highest number of heritage sites?
b. Which region has the lowest number of heritage sites? Is there anything
particularly interesting/odd about this region? Are there other similarly interesting
regions?
c. Add “Name” to the Details mark. What is the name of the site in the Region
“Europe and North America, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the
Caribbean”?
d. Remove “Name” from the Details mark. Add “Category” to the Colors mark. From
a qualitative perspective, which region has the largest share of “Natural” sites?
Tip: For each bar, look at the “area” colored by Natural sites relative to the entire
bar.
3. On Sheet 3, create a Side-By-Side Bar chart with Category, Region, and Count of Sites.
a. Which graph is easier to understand, the one in sheet 2d or sheet 3? Explain your
answer in 2-3 sentences.
4. On Sheet 4, create a bar chart with the names of the countries and the number of sites in
each country. Sort the bars from largest to smallest.
5. On Sheet 5, create a bar chart with the names of the countries and the total hectares of
land that the sites occupy in the region.
6. In Sheet 6, add States Name to the filter and select “France”. Now create a bar graph with
the Total Area in Hectares for each site (in France). Sort from largest to smallest. Add
“Short Description” to the Details mark. Add “Category” to the Colors mark.
a. Why is it that most sites do not have a “bar” for the bar chart?
b. Edit the axis (right click) and change the scale to logarithmic.
c. Do you think that this graph is better than the one without a logarithmic scale?
Why or why not?
Visualization Reference
You can check your work on the SkillBuilder assignment by referencing the images below. Each
image is a general depiction of what you should see on each Sheet of the workbook, with
various details hidden or omitted. Your visualizations do not need to look exactly like these
reference images! These should just be a general guide to check if you’re on the right track.
Sheet 1 (Question 1)
Sheet 2 (Question 2)
Colors are added to the bars on step d.
Sheet 3 (Question 3)
Sheet 4 (Question 4)
The image below only shows the top part of the chart; you should be able to scroll down to see
the other countries.
Sheet 5 (Question 5)
As with the previous chart, this image is only the top part of the chart.
Sheet 6 (Question 6a)
This image does not include the logarithmic scale added in step b. Only the top part of the chart
is shown.
