1)
Explain how these geological processes have shaped and fashioned the Earth, producing its rocks and minerals
2) Describe how natural and man-induced processes can create environments hazardous to civil engineers and construction projects, and how appropriate mitigation measures are chosen and adopted
Assignment Objective
The objective of this assessment is to understand the different types of Rocks and Minerals and to obtain the information about different civil engineering structures that are affected by different hazards and its mitigation measures.
This assignment is divided into two taskswill be attached in the PDF below.
Applied Geology (CIVL 0005.2) – Fall- 2020 – CW (Assignment 1) – A & B – QP
Assignment Tasks
In order to meet module-learning outcome, this assignment is divided into two tasks
1) Task-1 Submit a work proposal for this assignment on or before 29/10/2020 (23:59) which
must include:
[10 Marks]
Understanding of deliverables – a detail description of deliverables.
General overview of proposed plan – Initial understanding of solution to task 2.
Timeline for completion of the given tasks.
The work proposal must be submitted in a word file (Maximum of 1 page report) through
the link available in Moodle.
Task 2
2)
[90 Marks]
In order to meet the module-learning outcome 1 & 2, students are advised to answer the
following questions. Maximum of 800-1000 word count as mentioned in rule & regulations
below
I.
Discuss the importance of the rocks in the civil engineering construction. Explain any three rocks
with its formation process and how it is useful in the construction projects with their properties.
Students are asked to conduct a literature review and advised to include their understanding and
implementation methods in such case.
II.
Briefly explain the reasons of the structural failure of civil engineering constructions during past
5 years around the world with the effect of natural and/or man-induced processes and prepare a
report on the cause of hazard and mitigation measures implemented after hazard. Also, share
your ideas to reduce/ avoid such type of disasters in future with appropriate remedies. Include
the importance of hazard management in the construction
INTRODUCTION- In the introduction part of your task, describe natural and manmade hazards
related to site investigation, how are they formed, how these create hazards to civil

engineering construction projects, and how the types of rocks effect the construction projects.
Include literature to support your lines. Provide at least five citations in the text and the same
should be reflected in the references. Preferably, use MEC E Library resources
DISCUSSION- The purpose of this section is to present and illustrate your observation. Make
this section a completely objective report of findings, and save all interpretations for the
discussion. The objective of the discussion is to provide an interpretation of your observation
and support using evidence. Students are clearly advised to answer for both questions in detail
CONCLUSION
How do the ideas in your report connect to learning outcome, or to what researchers have
written in their work of your topic?
What new ideas have you added to the conversation? What ideas do you analyze?
REFERENCES
Use CU Harvard style for referencing books/ journals/ manual etc. Preferably, use MEC E
library resources. Minimum Ten references should be provided and also include
reference of MOOC
Rules & Regulations:
All resources should be cited using CU Harvard style.
The final assignment must have a Title page, Table of Contents, References/ bibliography
using CU Harvard Style and page numbers.
Title Page must have Assignment Name, Module name, Session, your name, ID, and the
name of the faculty.
Softcopy in word format is to be submitted through Turnitin link on Moodle.
Coursework shall be completed within 6-8 hours/between 800 words to 1000 words

Guidelines:
Assignment must be computer typed.
Font – Times New Roman
Font – Style – Regular
Font – Size – 12
Heading should be with Font Size 14, Bold, Capital and Underline.
Explain with suitable diagrams wherever required. Diagrams must be drawn using suitable
software or by pencil.
Each student has to do the assignment individually
You can refer books in E-Library or use internet resource. But you should not cut and paste
material from internet nor provide photocopied material from books. The assignment
answers should be in your own words after understanding the matter from the above
resources.
A student may be called for VIVA to discuss his work “if the instructor have a doubt
regarding the source of the work (ghost writing)”.
