Jia, P., Xue, H., Cheng, X., & Wang, Y. (2019). Effects of school neighborhood food
environments on childhood obesity at multiple scales: a longitudinal kindergarten cohort study in
the USA. BMC medicine, 17(1), 1-15.
Identify your topic
In sociology, various issues may be explored. Experts in diverse sociological areas and
fields can explore multiple challenges and concepts influencing the larger community. These
issues surround the overall connection between people and their environment. The two most
common issues which can be encountered and form a foundation for influencing decisionmaking in the federal systems include gender equity and childhood obesity. These social issues
affect how the community operates depending on the prevailing challenges and capacities of the
underlying resources. These issues arise in multiple areas and may have adverse effects on the
underlying populations. It is essential to gather additional insight into these issues to develop the
ideal interventions to prevent negative consequences. This project will, however, focus on
childhood obesity as one of the primary social issues affecting many young people today. This
topic has been selected because it offers a foundation for exploring the potential issues which
may arise in the community focusing on eating and lifestyles adopted by the various populations.
From another dimension, the topic offers insight into the potential issues which may affect the
future generation from a health dimension focusing more on nutrition and lifestyle practices.
Why did you choose this topic?
This topic has been selected because of various factors and aspects. Obesity remains a
major issue of concern in the country. The community has reported an increasing trend in

obesity. In the United States, it is projected that obesity affects about 35% of the total population.
It is essential to mention that obesity has been considered a chronic illness in many Americans
leading to adverse effects arising from multiple areas. One of the factors that have pushed the
country into considering obesity as a major health and social concern for the population is the
rising incidents that involve adverse effects on the underlying populations (Jia, Xue, Cheng &
Wang, 2019). While obesity has historically been considered a health concern, it affects the
overall wellness reported by the population from a social dimension. Many people who are
diagnosed with obesity find it hard to maintain the desired connection with their social settings.
From another dimension, childhood obesity has been among the most common issues
witnessed in the United States. This challenge has affected many children and populations. At
least 1 in six children is obese. 17% of the children in the country between 2 and 19 are
diagnosed with obesity. This figure translates into 12.7 million American children. However, the
rate of obesity in school children has been declining over the years. Regardless, obesity among
children remains a major concern with a rising pattern in the overall incidents within the United
States.
The other reason for the selection of this topic is that obesity is connected with multiple
chronic and serious conditions. These conditions may range from diabetes to heart-related
infections. These conditions undermine the quality of life led by the underlying populations. It is
essential to mention that many people fail to seek the required interventions to minimize the
effects linked with obesity. Amongst children, their overall health outcomes may be influenced
by various forces like the lifestyles adopted by their guardians (King et al. 2020). This trend
affects how the parents consider the health of their children. Similarly, the lifestyles adopted by
the children are among the highest contributing factors towards their health outcomes.

Some of the common issues which affect how the population may consider countering
obesity amongst young people include adopting healthy eating habits, physical exercises, and
seeking regular medical attention and screening. Many young children and people are subjected
to unhealthy eating habits, which affect their overall wellness outcomes. Young children in most
families are subjected to junk food. While some families have adopted such practices as
traditions, others are influenced by their overall daily schedules making it hard to prepare healthy
meals. Overall, these practices have exposed young people to various challenges from a health
dimension, making it hard to prevent obesity, overweight and related conditions.
Similarly, many young people are confined in their homes, which means that their
physical health is limited. The lack of sufficient resources and interventions has affected how
young people perceive their physical health. The lack of sufficient physical activities has affected
how young people perceive their overall wellness outcomes. It is essential to mention that many
young children may be subjected to lifestyles that do not favour physical activities. For example,
a community where mobility is by vehicles has affected the overall health outcomes recorded by
the underlying populations (Collie‐Akers et al., 2018). It is essential to mention that this trend
occurs even with the continued calls for the relevant stakeholders to encourage young people to
engage in physical activities. It follows that the overall ability to achieve the desired goals
concerning promoting health outcomes for the underlying populations may depend on various
forces and factors. The lack of sufficient insight into the best interventions to promote overall
wellness amongst young people has affected how they perceive their overall health.
Briefly discuss the connection between your sociological topic and your field of work.
This topic has been selected because it offers a reliable foundation for understanding the
best interventions for young people’s community wellness and outcomes. The government has a

major role in influencing the overall wellness reported by the population. This topic has been
selected because it aligns with my career path concerning community wellness and health
promotion. Therefore, through this topic, it will be possible to first examine the common issues
affecting a specified population while developing solutions to enhance the overall wellness
outcomes recorded in the course of operations. It is essential to mention that through the topic, it
will be easy to create and recommend strategies that promote social change. Therefore, the topic
relates to my field of work in that I am focused more on promoting social change within the
larger community. One way that I can achieve this goal is through health promotion. I will target
the children through strategic health promotion to minimize their current and future challenges
from a lifestyle dimension.
