1-The east side of Evansville has experienced rapid commercial development over the past 20 years. The red line in the figure below outlines a section of land bordered by Cross Pointe Blvd on the west, Oak Grove Road on the north, Interstate 69 on the east, and an undeveloped road on the south. This is the site of the new Costco Wholesale Store that opened in 2019. Prior to the construction of Costco, land use on this property was row crops. Using the rainfall-runoff equation in the NRCS TR55 manual, compute the runoff (Acre-Feet) for the developed area within the red border for the 25-year, 12 hour rainfall event (use NWS Atlas 14 4.69 inch) under the following land condition: a. 40% commercial, 25% parking lot, and 35% open space (good condition) for all soil types Hint: Use the NRCS web soil survey to develop an area-of-interest for the property. Determine the soil types and the hydrologic soil groups (HSG). For soils having a duel HSG designation (c.g. B/D), assume drained soil conditions and use the first letter (drained soil). The runoff curve numbers for each land use are shown in Table 2.2C in NRCS TR55. Use equation 2.3 in TR55 to compute the volume of runoff in acre-feet.
2- Water flows through a confined aquifer between a lake and a river. The sandstone aquifer has a hydraulic conductivity of 0.037 meters/day. The average distance between the two bodies of water is 4000 meters. The elevation of the lake surface is 618.5 meters, and the elevation of the river surface is 610.4 meters. The thickness (B) of the aquifer is 4 meters. Cimpute the expected flow rate from the lake to the river in m’/sec per meter of sandstone aquifer and gal/min per foot of sandstone aquifer. (Note: 7.48 gallons-I cubic foot)
