Jane Elliot’s “Eye of the Storm” Video – A Class Divided
In the 1950s and 1960s the U.S. was experiencing a racial crisis, similar to the racial divide that seems to threaten us at every turn today. In 1968, Jane Elliott, a third-grade teacher in Riceville, Iowa, was appalled at the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the ensuing comments made in response to this terrible event. She decided to conduct an experiment with her students, designed to show them how a single perceived difference could divide them against each other. She repeated the experiment over many years, with children and with adults. You can learn more at
