discuss his early years, golf career, and the controversy that ultimately brought to his demise.
INTRODUCTION
Which professional sports star, in your view, is the most dominating and well-known?
This is a point of contention for many of us, since we all have unique preferences or interests.
However, there is one person who was meant for greatness and was thrust into the limelight at a
very young age.
He is without a doubt the one individual in our lifetime who has revolutionized his sport.
With his presence, golf became more popular and was no longer a ratings buster on television, and
it became a sport in which more young people desired to participate.
His father saw his son’s passion in golf at a young age and dubbed him “The Chosen One”
(Callahan 23). Tiger’s father used to put him in his high chair as he hit golf balls in the basement
when he was a child. He kept a close eye on Tiger and tracked his every move. Soon after, Tiger
started imitating his father’s golf swing, and Earl Woods was astounded by what Tiger could do
with a golf club at the age of two. Tiger was discovered by the world when he was two years old,
2
when he appeared on the Mike Douglas show. At the age of five, he was featured in Golf Digest,
and by the age of eight, he was winning junior competitions against kids four to five years his
senior (Londino 23). He had a close relationship with his father, and it is commonly assumed that
Tiger derived his mental toughness from him. When Tiger tries to practice, his father often
produces a variety of noises. This left Tiger with two options: ignore the distraction or lose his
cool. At the age of 15, Woods became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur champion. He
successfully defended his title in 1992 and 1993.
Woods won the Masters Tournament by a record margin of 12 shots at the age of 21 in
1997, making him the youngest player and the first of African or Asian origin to do so. In 1997,
Woods became the youngest golfer to ever be rated #1 in a global golf competition after winning
five previous PGA titles. On July 23, 2000, Woods became the fifth and youngest player in golf
history (after Gene Sarazen, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, and Gary Player) to complete a career
Grand Slam of the four major titles (the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA
Championship). In 2005 and 2008, he completed two more Grand Slams in his career. However,
his quality of play deteriorated over the next decade, partially due to injuries, and he did not win
another major event until 2019, when he won his fifth Masters championship.
CONCLUSION
Tiger woods is such a mentor to many not only in golf playing, but also in life. His
endeavors are a lesson for everyone to embrace as a way of attaining success in a broad spectrum
of life. To all golf fraternity, he may be considered a father figure to be embraced and a hero to be
cherished and celebrated.
