MAJOR ASSIGNMENT: Research Paper on “Hills Like White
Elephants” Using MLA Style
● Due Saturday by 11:59pm
● Points 15
● Submitting a file upload
● File Types doc, docx, gdoc, and rtf
● Available until Mar 15 at 11:59pm
Please write a short research paper (5-7 pages) about “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway.
Your paper should have a strong, arguable thesis and should be well developed and supported with
scholarly resources as well as quotations from the original text. You should have three sections set off
with boldface subheads. Each section should support the thesis. It is a good idea to make an outline
before you begin writing your paper.
Your paper should have proper in-text citations, and it should also have a Works Cited list on a separate
page at the end of the paper. In-text citations are items that you quote inside your paper. A Works Cited
is a list of works that you quoted in your paper. These should correspond perfectly; every item quoted in
the text should be listed in the Works Cited; and conversely, every item in the Works Cited should
correspond to something quoted in the text. Both the in-text citations and the Works Cited should follow
MLA style, 8th Edition. Please refer to the grading rubric at the bottom of this assignment to see how this
final paper will be graded.
POSSIBLE TOPIC IDEAS:
* the use of alcohol in the story
* curtains as a symbol
* white elephants as a symbol
* Americans in Europe; the “Lost Generation”
* your idea as to how the story ends
* a feminist analysis
* Any topic that you would like to investigate related to this short story.
