PART A
What is the proposed research project’s topic?
The effect of technology used to detect and prevent weather and climate change.
What problem or issue is your research designed to solve?
The issue of weather and climate change has been an issue of the global concern. We are all aware that the threat of climate and weather change has been associated with multiple challenges to the people and the general economy. For instance, lives have been lost and properties of unknown values destroyed.
Climate and weather change
is not an easy and small meaning as we may see it. It is evident that they exhibit dangerous along with alarming effects. This research is designed to solve these issues of climate and weather change through the use of the rapid development or advancement of the information communication technology (ICT) which is indeed a blessing for human beings along with the integration of the revolutionary technology to serve humans in the diverse domain. In other words, the project is meant to explore the use of Information Technology in mitigating the climate and weather changes as well as help in the monitoring and detection of the various issues related to weather and climate change. Therefore, the research is geared towards reduction of climate changes effects on the environment (Pereira et al., 2013).
Why is solving the problem or issue important?
The economic costs of the natural catastrophes together with the human-made calamities caused by the changing climate and weather changes are projected to be about $ 370 billion. The other effects such as the injuries and loss of life are also immense. Therefore, it is important to solve these impacts of climate and weather change through the use of technology to reduce these effects.

PART B
Developing a research topic
It is a common experience to get stuck at the start of the research project and sometimes feel overwhelmed by the massive amount of research articles which are existing in the university and online databases. Similarly, one may also feel exhausted and even lost hope when it comes to narrowing the various themes presented by different literature reviews, reference pages, and online articles into a single research topic. This is because each research study comes with the hope and anticipation of discovering a new thing which one may be willing to study or explore. Considering the topic of the research I was thinking about, which is how information communication technology can be used to manage and detect the climate and weather change, it was also expected that I was going to spend days or weeks to get to the appropriate topic. It was surprising that I made the final decision on this topic after only five days of comprehensive research and analysis. Precisely, I had to examine at least seven research articles and publications together with the class notes to find the required and appropriate topic. As a competent researcher and writer, I had to integrate the various research strategies learned in class and other resources in developing and narrowing down my research topic from the various themes I had highlighted.
Although some instructors may provide a list of topics to choose from, I was given the opportunity to select my preferred topic. Therefore, I had to use my creative and analytical skills in developing the appropriate research topic from the list of themes. First and foremost, in the process of narrowing the theme into a research topic or research question, I had to make sure that the selected topic will meet the assignment requirements. In this case, the project prompt or instructions were clear, and there was no need to ask the professor as I was sure that the topic was to be related to information technology. I had to narrow down the theme to ensure that a societal or global issue is solved through the use of the modern world’s information communication technologies. Thus, the use of topic related to the information technology will be in line with the semester course, and this will also enable me to get maximum grades from the professor.
Moreover, I had to consider the topic which I am strongly interested in doing. Choosing a topic which is more appealing and interesting is ideal for the effective development of an appropriate and comprehensive results after the research. I have to admit that I have always been concerned and fascinated with the issues of climate and weather change. This is after watching and reading several news articles regarding the impacts of the climatic change in the society. Hence, it is always my dream to be involved in the mitigation and prevention of these catastrophes which have also come with various adverse effects. It was obvious that the research was going to be interesting, fun and engaging for me.
There was also the need to establish a research topic which is creative and appealing to my peers or classmates. I had to shy away from those who have repeatedly been written by various scholars and researchers. There was a need to be unique as it would attract many researchers to evaluate it and even provide more informative information on the issue of climate and weather change and how it can be detected and prevented.
Last but not least, I had to make sure that I do not pick a topic which is too broad as I was guided by the assignment prompt and the instructor’s instructions on how many pages I am required to write. Besides, I was aware that a broad topic might make it difficult to find the required and relevant information which is also focused and relevant. The scope of the topic could also avoid redundant information.
Precisely, I develop the research topic by narrowing the theme into three major contexts. This includes the significance of information technology; the impacts of the technology use; and detection and prevention of climate change. The three contexts are what formed my research topic which is the effect of technology used to detect and prevent weather and climate change.
Concept mapping of key ideas
As mentioned earlier, the three major concepts which will be the primary subtopics of discussion include the use of technology, its effects and the detection and prevention mechanism. All these concepts are connected with the weather and climate change which is the main research topic. Some of the natural disasters which come as a result of the drastic weather and climate change that will also be detected and mitigated through the use of the various technologies include extreme weather such as hurricanes, heat waves, and droughts. Global warming is another impact of the climate and weather change, and this is known to cause the melting glaciers. Last but not least, the air pollution is known to be the leading cause of carbon dioxide as well as the greenhouse effects. Typically, after the identification and classification of these impacts of weather and climate change, there will need to discuss the various types of technologies which are essential in the prevention and detection of both weather and climate change to prevent the occurrence of these impacts.
Nonetheless, the different types of information technology which can be used preventing or mitigating and detecting the changes in weather and climate is another concept which will be discussed. All these technologies are meant to provide a lasting solution as far as the challenges of the weather, and climate changes are concerned. It should also be noted that the use of information communication technologies including the radio and telecommunication technologies will be critical for the forecasting of weather, predicting or detecting as well as in the mitigation of the impacts of the mentioned natural calamities.
Notably, according to World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the role of Information technology in the prevention and detection of weather and climate can be summarized by the integrated core system elements. The first component is Global Observing System (
GOS
) offers various observations concerning the atmosphere as well as the Earth’s surface including oceans. The GOS utilizes the remote sensing tool which is placed on the satellite or aircraft. However, the Global Telecommunication System (
GTS
) entails the radio and telecommunication networks necessary for the real-time transfer of a significant volume of data. Last but not least, the Global Data Processing System (
GDPS
) involves thousands of connected mini, micro together with the supercomputers which are responsible for processing and analyzing the large volume of data while generating warnings and forecasts. Other systems include weather satellites which are responsible for tracking the progress of hurricanes; radio-based meteorological aid systems which is responsible for collecting and processing of data along with the various radio communication systems (Pereira & Baharom 2016).

Perspective on the topic
Weather and climate change is indeed a global geographic challenge. Lowering the uncertainties or risks which are caused by both the weather and climate change is also an immense issue. Various individuals including the scientists, policymakers, engineers among others have been struggling to come up with different types of technologies to better understand this complex condition as well as provide some tangible solutions. This topic will play a critical role in ensuring that the technology provides a means of assessing, planning together an implementation of the various sustainable programs which can adversely affect us today and the future (Simonovic & Eng 2002).
There is much value and anticipation of this research when the various results and recommendations are put into practice. Since weather and climate change is a geographic issue, I believe that solving requires a geographic and technological solution. The information communication and technology can play critical roles in the detection and management of natural disasters which come as a result of changes in both weather and climate. Nonetheless, the integration of technologies can be specifically essential in the assessment of the risks, mitigation and also in the preparation stage of the disaster management. To be able to integrate or implement the routine use of the technology-based solutions, it is necessary to create and increase awareness, establish or build national capacity as well as develop solutions which are customized and suitable to the requirements of the developing world (Yang et al., 2013).
