STOP: Have you watched today’s lecture video? If not, you must do that first before you move on to these two activities.
BACKGROUND:
The events that led up to declaring independence in July of 1776 have been written about and analyzed extensively. Below is a useful Youtube video that provides background and excellent overviews of the evolution toward and arguments for the Declaration of Independence.
The Enlightenment, among other things, greatly influenced the framers of the Constitution, especially the author of the Declaration of Independence– Thomas Jefferson.
ACTIVITY 1:
Watch this video on the Social Contract theory of John Locke
The Enlightenment: Social Contract
While watching the video, please take notes and write key takeaways from the video directly into your notebook.
(Your notes will be checked upon return to school by me).
ACTIVITY 2:
Read this website link and title your notes again, “Was the Revolution Justified”.
Was the Revolution justified?
Once you have finished reading the annotated and abbreviated version of the Declaration of Independence, answer this question in Google Classroom:
From what we have learned thus far in HUSH, combined with the knowledge provided by the above website, was the American Revolution justified? Cite specific evidence from Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence in your response and rationale.
(Your notes will be checked upon return to school by me).
Once finished with Activities 1 and 2, you may work independently.
