3. In your own words, describe what “resident wellness” means to you ?
a. As an older applicant that has had varios life experiences and has had varios
employment experiences. I have heard the term resident wellness=work life balance
etc. unfortunately most of my experience these terms have been just empty promises
and a punch line. For me resident wellneess needs to be more than a meditation room,
or monthly yoga, or biannual retreats. Yes these are all great additions but there needs
to be more. For example, faculty need to be aware of a residents strengths and
weakeness to provide frequent and fundamental feedback that aids in the learning
process. Providing adequate and timely access to a mental health professional to help
with training with behavioral skills such as self-compassion, cognitive reframing and
mindfulness. In addition simple things such as access to nutritious food, exercise
equipment etc. And providing adequate days off to attend to personal needs. In my 4
yrs of medical school thus far, I have not been able to regularly have physicals, obtain
bloodwork, ive gained roughly 40 lbs. Lastly, having something like having junior
residents being paired with senior residents to build a strong friend and collegual
support network. `
