Today’s society is filled with the need to cover up or adjust history to new narratives in the political scene. The political society is obsessed with the idea of erasing memories and history as if it did not happen. There have been significant events in history that politics never wants to reflect on, including the Vietnam War, Holocaust, Yugoslavia massacres, and the bombing of Hiroshima. The modern political society, including the Trump administration, has tried to change the historical narrative by shutting down the media. History shows wins and victories, but there are numerous things that the country was negatively associated with that the people should also know about. The press serves as a representation of Sonja in the film The Nasty Girl. This is because the media today is open about various aspects of politics, uncovering elements that the government is not proud of for its people to know the country’s real history. However, politicians, including President Donald Trump, have been at the forefront of ensuring that the narrative is retold differently in a way that paints the government in a different light.
In the film “The Nasty Girl,” Sonja participated in an essay writing contest and researched her town’s association with the Third Reich (Indie Outlook, 2018). This was the third regime of the Nazis of Germany. She discovers the town’s dark history and its collaboration with the Nazis. The town had a history of resisting the Nazi influence, but her discovery reveals that the town collaborated with them and had deep roots within the Third Reich. Her findings were not welcomed in the town as individuals tried to block her efforts to discover and tell the truth. The town had always shared the stories of defiance and heroism, but her history revealed a significant contrast. Her town had been involved in sending approximately 400 jews to concentration camps from Passau (Indie Outlook, 2018). She also discovered a catholic newspaper editor who had praised Hitler. Hitler was among the most feared leaders during the Nazi regime for his racial inclinations and ideologies. His leadership oversaw the genocide of millions of jews and other victims whom he and his people saw as subhuman or undesirable.
Similarly, today’s political scene is quick to act upon whistleblowers who attempt to bring up the country’s dark history or paint undesirable images of the governments. The political scene is bent on telling tales of wondrous things and heroism while struggling to hide the unpleasant. It is the right of every citizen to learn about history, whether good or bad, because they all define what the country is and help to show significant growth. Therefore, politicians should earn to appreciate history and openly embrace it. For example, former President Donald Trump has had a rocky relationship with the media and declared war on the American press. According to him, the media was filled with fake reporting and was out of control and painted the media as the enemy of the American people (Kalb, 2017). Similarly, Sonja was painted as an enemy of her people for telling the truth of her town. This depicts the extent the politicians can go to retell history differently, revealing only the victories and hiding the darkness.
