Students must respond comprehensively to any two of the following questions. All responses must be in essay form and must contain a strong balance of analysis and evidence. They should be articulate, well organized, and technically sound in terms of grammar, syntax, and spelling.
PLEASE NOTE that examination responses are governed by the university’s rules on academic dishonesty. Because this is an open-book exam, you must provide Chicago-style footnotes or endnotes for any direct quotations. Please ensure that you do not extensively use material that you have submitted for another assignment in this course. Indeed, it would be best to avoid the subject of your third assignment, “Collect and Curate Images,” in order to avoid temptation.
1.Discuss the evolution of the United Irish movement. What other movements and events influenced the philosophy of the United Irishmen? What were their primary aims? How did they try to achieve their goals? Were they successful? Why or why not? What was the legacy of the 1798 rebellion to the Irish people?
2.Describe the origins of Fenianism in Ireland and the United States in the middle of the 19th century. Discuss the branches of the movement, and its personnel, organization, goals, and activities during the late 1850s and the 1860s. How effective was the Fenian rising of 1867?
