Response 1. The patrol officer is “the largest unit of a department” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 145). All police officers and sheriffs started as patrol officers. Patrol officers are considered first responders because they are first to the scene when non emergency calls are made. Patrol officers work in the community and are “assigned to beats or districts” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 145). Arrests made by patrol officers “are reviewed, approved by a sergeant or the watch commander” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 146). The detective usually steps in when the patrol officer cannot “handle the incident or crime and a further investigation is needed” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 146). The chief executive of a law enforcement department can elect a detective and another way is through competitive examination. The main role of the detective is “to do a follow up investigation on assigned cases, look at evidence and make a case for prosecution” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 146). The detectives have to analyze crime scenes, look at photos of evidence, interview friends, neighbors and family members, look at autopsy results, obtain search and arrest warrants, get witnesses prepared for court and make sure the prosecutor and the defense attorney have copies of all documents. The supervisor has the role of “assigning duties or cases, scheduling workers, making decisions, advising work personnel, evaluating and documenting performance” (Conser et al, 2013, p. 147). Chief executive officers “lead, coordinate and guide” all work personnel (Conser et al, 2013, p. 147). All these people work together by using teamwork and skills to solve and eliminate crime. There are 4 stress factors. External factors are “negative media coverage and lack of scheduling officers for court appearances”. Internal stressors are “poor training and excessive paperwork”. Stressors in the work itself are “enforcing laws and dangers on the job”. Stressors confronting the individual officer are “furthering education and fears of job competence” (Conse et al, 2013, p. 150). The stressor I believe that affects law enforcement the most is external stressors because today the media makes law enforcement out to be negative by making them look like killers. Many people do not respect law enforcement because people think when cases are not getting solved, law enforcement is not working hard enough. Most videos posted on the news, Facebook, Instagram or Youtube have to do with officers “to do with the use of excessive force” when needed (Dominican University of California). Citizens think police officers use too much excessive force when trying to get a person to calm down.

Response 2. Police Organization have been described in several ways based on the characteristics they share and which they operate. Police departments have been identified as bureaucracies, quasi-military Patrol organization, monopolies, and street-level bureaucracies. Officers are the eyes and ears and the backbone of all municipal, county, and state policing organizations (Conser, 2013,pg 145). Patrol forces comprise the largest component of a department, and all other units in the organization are designed to directly or indirectly support their operations. Police officers are usually the first responders to most complaints. Detectives is a patrol officer at the scene that conducts the initial investigation of a crime or incident. Detectives are officers who have been promoted or assigned to the investigation function on a full-time basis. Most police agencies do not have a full-time detective, so all the duties go to the patrol officer. the supervisor role is one of coordinating and managing a group of personnel for which he or she is responsible (Conser, 2013, pg 146). The chief executive officer of any law enforcement agency is to lead, coordinate, guide, and manage all the units and personnel employed within the agency. Law enforcement officials occupying this position may have various titles besides the common chief of police, including sheriff, commissioner, director, superintendent, colonel, marshal, and chief constable. The chief usually determines the mission and goals of the agency and communicating these to the department personnel and the community. They all work together to produce public assistance on many matters, order maintenance, community problem, traffic matters, order maintenance, community problems. Stress and discretion are factors for that influences the daily lives of many professional. Many communities feel as officer use too much deadly force and they feel some are races. There are 4 stress factors. External factors are “negative media coverage and lack of scheduling officers for court appearances”. Internal stressors are “poor training and excessive paperwork”.
