Wow. I knew that I was not an APA pro, but I figured I was doing okay with my written papers, but after reviewing the lesson this week, I can see where I’ve been messing up my editing.
I didn’t realize you needed to use the semicolons when listing in between multiples items. It always did seem strange to me how it sounded when listing items, but I didn’t realize that there was a different way to list. I also didn’t realize that you could use the letters (a), (b), etc. when listing.
Something I’d like to reiterate to my classmates is in regard to the usage of “et. al.”. I had a general knowledge of the “et. al.” usage but it was nice confirming there is no comma after the author’s last name in that segment. Also, it is used with 3 or more authors! I was always under the assumption it was more than 3! This is something I’ll have to take back to my rough draft and adjust.
Creating the Reference page is always a debacle, and I will admit I have to use the Purdue Owl resources frequently. I feel like there are so many variations with writing in APA that you see in resources, so it does get confusing. For instance, using “pp.” for pages. I’ve seen it before with APA and then, I’ve seen it without. I typically never use quotes; I feel like that has been branded in my brain.
It is very important to have someone proofread your paper because getting a fresh perspective and fresh eyes on the product is never a bad thing! As we’ve identified over the past few discussions, there are definitely issues with writing a paper and getting so consumed by word content, enough resources, enough pages, etc. that we can lose the main though and idea behind the written work. Also, I think we can get very repetitive and lose our reader’s interests. Having another read over the paper is helpful because they could help identify if the content made sense to them; Did it flow well? Were they able to decide after reading your work that they agree, disagree, or are neutral? Also, the sheer fact of giving details on your editing with grammar is very helpful as well.
