This week we are discussing our diets as we grow. Specifically, I will be covering an example of a college-aged youth in Topic 3, trying to discern what is wrong with her diet, if anything.
In the example, it is easy to see something is wrong with Claire’s diet. The one glaring example is that there is no mention of any water intake. Women need to drink as much as 2.7 liters per day(mayoclnic.org, 2020); 20% of that comes from food intake(Gordon, n.d.). However, Claire may need more than that as she is a cross country college athlete and presumably sweating quite a bit. She is also drinking beverages that may be high in sugar, further contributing to her dehydration.
Being dehydrated might be contributing to her trouble concentrating and feeling tired. However, on top of that, she may be suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia. Anemia is when a person’s blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body’s tissue. In Claire’s case, the anemia appears to be due to a lack of iron in her diet. She is getting plenty of carbs and fats but is seriously lacking in healthy proteins and leafy greens, both of which contain quite a bit of iron. Nevertheless, Claire should not take my word for it. Her school may have a nutritionist handy for its athletes, and if not, she should at least consult with her coach, who should have some knowledge in nutrition. If all that does not help, Claire should consult a doctor to try and diagnose exactly what is happening with her.
