Theresa
My name is Theresa Francis. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in education. I am extremely grateful to be halfway through receiving my Master’s. Although some days I feel like it is impossible for me to attain my Master’s degree because I am a wife, a mother of 3 beautiful children, and I assist my mother daily. I often remind myself that I am stronger than I feel. Currently, I am taking a break from teaching. I taught for about 2 1/2 years before I decided to take a break. I taught in both a special education setting as well as a regular or primary education setting. In my early 20s, I decided to apply to be a substitute teacher. I was offered a position almost immediately. It was quite shocking because I didn’t have any type of experience teaching. I assume that substitute teachers and permanent teachers were in high demand. When I started teaching as a substitute I immediately developed a passion for teaching. I know it sounds cliché but I felt like I found my calling. Watching my students learn and grow made me only a better substitute teacher and a better person. After about a month of teaching as a substitute, I was offered a permanent position as a teacher for the rest of the year. I didn’t even have to think about it. Immediately, I said yes; as you can imagine. Very long story short, I taught there for about a year, and afterward, I transferred to teach at an alternative school. Although there were many challenges teaching students who have both special education needs and mental health needs, I pushed through. About 80% of my students were able to return to their regular education setting. To this day my students still email me just to check on me. I honestly can’t wait to get back to teaching. Currently, I am a case manager. I work with adults who suffer from mental health illnesses and drug and alcohol addictions. I decided to take this job because the hours are flexible and I can focus on furthering my education without being overwhelmed as I would be with a 9 to 5. Overall, I am extremely excited to be back in class. I will forward to learning and growing with you all over the next eight weeks.
