When it comes to American literature, things that stand out that make this era of writing so important are that the individuals who developed stories took their own directions in literature not following the typical writing style. This creates a different perspective to the reader than traditional styles of writing. Luka Malgaj states in his article Main Characteristics of American Literature, “Writers of other counties seem to absorb their national literary traditions. But many American authors have rejected the old in order to create something new.” (Malgaj, 2009) This has allowed these writers to utilize their personal experiences and influences to draw their readers’ attention.
American literature is a direct representation of the “American Identity” through their writing; authors used things in their lives that influenced them in some way to tell their version of American history, whether it demonstrates a positive or negative effect on American history. Through this writing, we can see how we have developed and learned from our past mistakes.
Throughout this course, if I had to pick an author that piqued my interest the most, more so than my favorite author because I’m a big fan of Washington Irving’s writing. I would have to say Harriet Beecher Stowe’s writing of Uncle Tom’s Cabin significantly caught my interest so much that I will be looking to get her book and actually finish reading soon. This story she wrote shows one of the darkest times in American history, and through her writing, she was able to be a huge influence on abolishing enslaved people in the south. With these stories, she brought light to the horrible treatment of enslaved human beings in the south, which wasn’t well known in the north.
Good luck to everyone in pursuit of their future education.
