Question
What considerations must be given to the selection of a qualitative methodology for a research study? Based on what you know now, which of these considerations do you believe are the most important? Why?

Qualitative research methods differ from the structures of quantitative. Quantitative refers to more of a statistical approach while qualitative has more of a flexible approach. For example as seen in our text, (Maul et al., 2020,) qualitative research is conducted in a more open ended approach that has a search for meaning. The method can still contain visuals and items of research containing numbers, however it is not as structured as the qualitative approach with numerical findings. Being able to have a comparison of both qualitative and quantitative assists with determining which route to approach for the dissertation process. I myself, have been a bit torn as to weather my research which contains surveys from employees on retention would be able to fall on more of a quantitative basis as opposed to qualitative. The findings in the current chapter will assist with the determination of which route to take my research in the future. I believe one of the most important factors with the comparison is seeing how qualitative has more of an open ended approach and search for meaning in one’s research while quantitative is search for more of the statistical findings for one’s defense.

When thinking about qualitative research there are several different things considerations and reasoning behind the purpose of this type of study. In a quantitative study there are less citations and it’s not considered scholarly research according to (Pearse 2021). During a qualitative study the researcher must consider the goals of the research as well as the data collection and the analysis behind the study (Maul et. Al, 2020). A qualitative method of research, focused on the integration of the research components; so that the selected method motivates everything else that follows within the study. Being as though quantitative research is based off of descriptive results, that is normally the outcome. A biggest consideration would be when selecting methodology to utilize the outcome of the research. Qualitative methodology to utilize the outcome of the research. Qualitative methodology is the most consider because the researcher has to consider if it answers the research questions (Maul, et al, 2020).

In week 4, you read a quantitative research article by Barnett (2017), and this week you have read a qualitative research article by Katsioloudes and Cannonier (2019). Compare and contrast the major differences between the two methodologies. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research. In finding articles for your dissertation, does your field tend to conduct more quantitative or qualitative research? Why is it important to have more than one kind of methodology available to conduct research?

In overviewing both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, one begins to see the differences in each method. Quantitative researches more of the statistical and mathematical view of research findings and uses specific tools to represent the data accordingly. For example, Barnett (2017), explains a study on the job satisfaction of online adjuncts and its relation to the behaviors of the current administrative leadership. This study was conducted with numerical findings using a formula to study instrument scores on results for leadership styles and their correlation to job satisfaction using a correlation analysis and formula. This type of research is seen more in the quantitative approach. Within the qualitative approach one sees a more open ended method of research. Katsioloudes and Cannonier (2019), researches a study on leadership development with undergraduate students that includes a methodology on seeking to understand the students/ samples views in a more non numeric approach. This study expressed an area where the students opinions and growth from the leadership development affected them. This gives a bit of a more open ended opinion base finding as opposed to the structured numerical findings in the quantitative method. In opinion given the examples of both week four and week five articles it is important to have a form of both statistics and the opinions given by the qualitative study. Having both methods can assist in securing the findings of one’s defense by having real individuals opinions as results as well as the facts supported by statistical research to show the importance for a need for change or an overall result of a specific study conducted. I hope to possibly incorporate both methods in my dissertation findings going forward.
