Reflect on the course objectives, clinical practice guidelines, the three to five clinical objectives, and your plan to incorporate clinical practice guidelines for your clinical/practicum experience that you developed earlier in the course.
In 250-500 words, summarize the objectives you met during your clinical/practicum experience and discuss your incorporation of the course objectives and clinical practice guidelines. Provide specific examples to justify and illustrate your experiences.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.
Review the course objectives and consider how you can develop the specified skills and
competencies while applying clinical practice guidelines as an AGACNP providing patient care
and creating appropriate patient-centered care plans. List three to five clinical objectives and
write a 250-word summary of your plan to incorporate the course objectives and clinical
practice guidelines for your clinical experience. Include discussion of what you hope to achieve.
You will refer back to this information during Topic 16 when you are asked to reflect on your
clinical objectives.
This semester, I hope it to be better than the last, as far as clinical. Although I had a good
learning experience, I was not hands-on like I wanted to be. This semester I will be with a neuro
interventionist team precepting with nurse practitioners. They will be rounding in all units of the
hospital and responding to code strokes. I will also be able to witness brain microvascular
interventions.
While managing these critical patients, I will apply evidence-based practice (EBP) and
demonstrate ethical and caring behaviors that integrate the spiritual and psychosocial
needs of patients and families. Duke University Medical Center defines EBP as the integration
of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence into the decision-making
process for patient care (AANP, 2018). EBP allows healthcare providers to apply research
findings into practice (AANP, 2018). Given that the majority of these patients that I will manage
are critical; therefore, integrating spiritual and psychosocial needs to the patient and family is a
considerable addition to care. Emotional presence is needed just as much as clinical. I respect all
cultures and religions and will give my all to make sure that the patient and family are
comfortable expressing their wishes. I planned to be in tune with patient care.
Another clinical objective I plan to incorporate this semester is knowing what and when to
order specific labs, imaging, and other studies—distinguishing when there is an emergent
situation or non-emergent. I do not want to over order and then see myself chasing after a
different diagnosis. Over ordering can lead to more work than planned. Not that I want to leave
any undiagnosed problems, but some issues can be managed as an outpatient. Finding other
issues is not the only problem, but it is costly to the hospital and the patient. According to
Healthcare Finance News, many experts estimate about two-hundred billion dollars are wasted
yearly on testing and treatments (2017).
Performing complete and focused physical exams (PE) on neuro patients is vital. Managing
head traumas, strokes, and other neurological issues are essential to understand it will damage or
cause debilitating effects to certain parts of the body. A thorough physical exam will help the
provider understand what part of the brain is affected before imaging.
Last but not limited to, documenting. My goal is to document a clear and concise note on this
population. In addition to proper PE, properly documenting what you examined allows other
providers to get a picture of what is found. Being that I am precepting with a consulted group,
other providers depend on what we encounter and our plan of care. Last semester, I was not able
to document even though I had access to the computer system. This semester hopefully, will be
different.
