Purpose: The purpose of current events assignments are to find current hospitality
examples of topics covered over the last few weeks. Keeping current with what is
happening in the hospitality industry is an important practice.
• Skills: As a result of completing this assignment, you will practice written
communication. Access and collect current information from appropriate primary
sources.
• Knowledge: Students will gain learn how to access library databases, hospitality
organizations research, and articles, podcasts, or videos found on the web.
Task: In order to complete this assignment you will execute the following.
Post a current event on one of the Human Resources subjects covered in Chapters 8 or 9
that relate to employees or managers in the hospitality industry. A few topics from the
chapters include:
• Performance appraisal process,
• Problems with performance appraisals,
• Methods of appraising performance,
• Performance appraisal training,
• Approaches to administering discipline,
• Discharge interviews, or
• Exit interviews.
• Write one to two paragraphs that discuss 2-3 main points presented in the hospitality
related article (200-350 words).
• Write one to two paragraphs that describe how it relates to human resources in the
hospitality industry (minimum of 150 words).
o The article you choose must be at least two pages long.
o The article you choose must relate to the hospitality industry.
o The article you choose must be published after 2012.
• Include the website address or link to the article if you cannot download and
attach to this discussion posting.
• Be sure to put the reference information in your assignment using APA
formatting.
o Please cite your source. The minimum information that must be included
in the citation is the following:
o If printed or electronic journal article: Title of Article, Title of Journal,
Date and Issue number (if available).
o If web site: Title of article or company and website address.
• Post your current event assignment by Thursday at 10:00 pm.
Criteria for Success: A successful assignment will have the following
characteristics:
• A critical evaluation of one of the chosen topic.
• Sources will be cited the end of your discussion using APA format.
• Notes to posting on the discussion board:
o You may use a word processor to complete the discussion before
posting in Learn. Then copy and paste the information into the
discussion board.
o Do not attach the file to the discussion area.
o It is nearly impossible for the class members and for me to keep up with
reading each posting if we have to download attached files.
• Proper grammar, spelling, and professional language are used.
• Late assignments are not accepted.
• Part of class participation is current events. Keeping current with what is
happening in the hospitality industry is an important practice.
✓ You will be required to post 4 of the 5 current event assignments as
assigned on Web Campus for up to a total of 40 points.
✓ You may use articles, podcasts or videos for this assignment. You may
not use any of the additional readings, podcasts, or videos assigned for the
weekly readings.
✓ Articles, podcasts, or videos may not be older than 2012.
